My husband begged me to be a surrogate for his gay boss to help him get

Daniel had called twice, complaining about how exhausting the conference was.

I stared at the photograph.

“Why?”

Rebecca looked down.

“Because Graham wanted a family. Daniel wanted a better position. And they believed they could give each other what they wanted.”

I couldn’t speak.

Rebecca continued.

“The arrangement was supposed to work like this. You would carry the baby, Graham would appear to be the intended father, and Daniel would receive the promotion and financial security he had been promised.”

“But the baby is ours.”

“Yes.”

“Why would Graham want our child?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“Because he believed Daniel would eventually leave you.”

My hands began shaking.

“He believed what?”

“He thought the baby would give Daniel a reason to build a different life. A life with him.”

I pushed the photograph away.

“No. This is insane.”

“I wish it were.”

“Why would Daniel agree to that?”

Rebecca’s expression changed.

“Because he was promised more than a promotion.”

She removed one final document.

It was an employment agreement.

Graham had offered Daniel a senior position in a new company they were planning to establish together.

There was also a financial agreement.

A significant payment.

But the most disturbing part was a handwritten note attached to the back.

Once the baby is born, Daniel can finally make his decision.

I looked at Rebecca.

“What decision?”

“Whether to stay with you or start a new life with Graham.”

My throat tightened.

“And what about me?”

Rebecca didn’t answer.

She didn’t need to.

I stood up.

“I need to go.”

“Wait.”

She grabbed the envelope.

“There is something else.”

I turned.

“Your husband has been telling Graham that you already agreed to raise the baby as part of their family arrangement.”

My blood went cold.

“What does that mean?”

“It means Daniel has been promising Graham that he will have access to the child after the birth.”

“Access? He’s the biological father!”

“Yes. But the legal agreement was supposed to make Graham the intended parent.”

I felt sick.

“What about Sophie?”

Rebecca looked uncomfortable.

“Daniel told Graham that once everything was settled, Sophie would eventually accept the arrangement.”

I couldn’t believe what I was hearing.

My daughter.

My little girl.

Had been discussed as though she were another item in a business negotiation.

I grabbed my handbag.

“Why are you helping me?”

Rebecca looked away.

“Because I stayed silent when I should have spoken up. I knew what they were planning, and I told myself it wasn’t my problem.”

She paused.

“Then I found out Daniel was planning to blame everything on you if the arrangement collapsed.”

I froze.

“Blame me for what?”

“That you had changed your mind. That you had become emotionally unstable. That you were refusing to cooperate.”

My fingers tightened around my handbag.

“Why would he do that?”

“Because he needed to protect his reputation.”

I walked out of the café without saying goodbye.

Outside, the air was cold.

I sat in my car and cried until my chest hurt.

Then I called my lawyer.

I didn’t tell her everything over the phone.

I simply said:

“I need an urgent appointment. My husband has been hiding something about the baby I’m carrying, and I think I’ve been deceived into signing an agreement under false pretenses.”

Her response was immediate.

“Don’t confront him yet. Bring every document you have.”

For the first time in months, someone was telling me what I needed to hear.

Not to be patient.

Not to be understanding.

Not to sacrifice more for my marriage.

But to protect myself.

That evening, Daniel came home carrying a shopping bag.

“I bought you something.”

Inside was a beautiful necklace.

A small gold heart.

I looked at it without touching it.

“What’s the occasion?”

He smiled.

“Do I need one?”

Then he knelt beside the sofa and rested his hand on my stomach.

“I’ve been thinking about the future.”

I stared at him.

“Have you?”

“Yes. About us. About the baby. About everything we’re building.”

I forced a smile.

“That’s interesting.”

He looked up.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

He kissed my forehead.

“You’re going to be such a wonderful mother.”

I almost laughed.

I already was a mother.

I was carrying a child he had manipulated me into believing belonged to someone else.

And he was still pretending that everything was normal.

That night, after he fell asleep, I opened my phone and sent Rebecca one message.

I need every document you have.

She replied:

I’ll help you. But there’s one more thing you need to know.

I stared at the screen.

What?

Her answer came a minute later.

Graham is coming to your house this weekend. Daniel wants to announce the baby’s future before you give birth.

I felt my blood turn cold.

They were planning something.

And whatever it was, I knew I couldn’t let them decide my child’s future without me.

PART 4: THE TRUTH THAT DESTROYED EVERYTHING

Saturday arrived.

Daniel had spent the entire morning cleaning the house.

He changed the bedsheets, polished the dining table, and even bought flowers.

When I asked why he was making such a fuss, he smiled.

“Graham is coming for dinner. I thought we should make it special.”

I looked at him.

“Why?”

“Because he’s done a lot for us.”

I almost choked.

“Has he?”

Daniel frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing.”

He walked toward me and placed his hands on my shoulders.

“Listen, I know this arrangement has been difficult. But we’re nearly at the end. After the baby comes, everything will be different.”

I looked down at his hands.

“Different for whom?”

He smiled.

“For all of us.”

At seven o’clock, Graham arrived.

He was wearing an expensive navy suit and carrying a bottle of wine.

He greeted Daniel with a familiarity that made my skin crawl.

Then he turned toward me.

“How are you feeling?”

“Fine.”

“You’re looking wonderful. Pregnancy suits you.”

“Thank you.”

He glanced at my stomach.

“How’s the little one?”

I instinctively placed a hand over it.

“She’s moving a lot.”

Graham smiled.

“Good. I can’t wait to meet her.”

I looked at him.

“Can I ask you something?”

“Of course.”

“Have you ever wondered whether this arrangement is fair to me?”

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“Sweetheart, we’ve discussed this.”

I ignored him.

“I want to hear Graham’s answer.”

Graham adjusted his cuff.

“Of course I’ve considered your feelings. I know this is an extraordinary gift.”

“Then why did you agree to have a child that isn’t biologically yours?”

Silence.

Daniel’s face went pale.

Graham slowly placed his glass on the table.

“What are you talking about?”

I looked directly at him.

“I know the embryo was created using Daniel’s and my genetic material.”

Daniel stood up.

“Enough.”

I turned toward him.

“No. I think we’ve had enough secrets.”

Graham looked between us.

“Daniel?”

My husband ran a hand through his hair.

“She’s been emotional lately. The pregnancy—”

“Don’t.”

My voice was quiet.

But something in it made him stop.

“I heard your conversation. I found the documents. And I know about the arrangement you made behind my back.”

Graham slowly sat down.

For a moment, nobody spoke.

Then he said something I wasn’t expecting.

“I never intended to hurt you.”

I laughed.

It was an ugly, broken sound.

“Then why did you let me believe I was carrying your child?”

He looked at Daniel.

My husband wouldn’t meet his eyes.

Graham sighed.

“Because Daniel told me you knew.”

I stared at him.

“What?”

“He said you had agreed to everything. He told me the biological arrangement was something you both wanted.”

I turned toward Daniel.

“Is that what you told him?”

He didn’t answer.

“Daniel!”

He finally looked up.

“I was trying to make everything work.”

“By lying to your wife?”

“By protecting our family!”

I couldn’t believe the words coming out of his mouth.

“Protecting our family? You used our marriage, our daughter, and this pregnancy to negotiate a job!”

Daniel’s expression hardened.

“You don’t understand the pressure I’ve been under.”

I shook my head.

“Then you should have talked to me.”

“I did talk to you!”

“No. You told me what you wanted and made me feel guilty whenever I questioned it.”

He opened his mouth.

I continued.

“You knew I wanted another child someday. You knew I loved being pregnant. You used those things to make me agree to something I never would have accepted if I’d known the truth.”

Graham looked uncomfortable.

“Daniel, you told me she was fully informed.”

I turned toward him.

“And you believed that?”

He didn’t answer.

Then Daniel said the words that finally broke whatever remained of my love for him.

“I didn’t think you’d make such a big deal out of it.”

I stared at him.

For a moment, I couldn’t even understand what I had heard.

A big deal?

I was carrying a child.

My child.

His child.

And he had arranged my pregnancy as though he were negotiating the purchase of a house.

“Get out,” I whispered.

Daniel frowned.
