My daughter went away to scout camp for a week, and I was so happy when she sent me a photo — but after I looked at it more closely, I frantically called the camp.

She had already lost the cap.

Neither of us spoke for a moment.

“Fine,” she muttered.

I laughed, and eventually agreed to let her go.

It would be her first time away from home for more than a single night.

The first two days were much harder on me than they seemed to be on her.

Phones were discouraged during camp activities, so I tried not to message her constantly. The first night, I received one short text.

Made it. Cabin is small. Food is weird. Love you.

The second night, there was nothing.

I told myself that was probably a good sign.

She was busy.

Then, on the third day, my phone buzzed while I was eating lunch at my desk.

Ava had sent me a photo.

She stood smiling near a group of picnic tables with several girls from her troop behind her.

At first glance, everything looked completely normal.

Underneath the picture, Ava had written:

We just finished training and we’re heading to lunch. See? Everything’s fine. It’s so much fun here! Love you and miss you!

I smiled.

I actually whispered, “See? She’s fine.”

Then I looked at the photo one more time.

There was a girl sitting at the table behind Ava.
