My daughter went away to scout camp for a week, and I was so happy when she sent me a photo — but after I looked at it more closely, I frantically called the camp.

My 12-year-old daughter sent me a smiling photo from scout camp to prove everything was fine. At first, I felt relieved. Then I noticed something disturbing in the background: a person who wasn’t supposed to be there. I called my daughter twice. When she didn’t answer, I called the camp.

My daughter, Ava, is twelve, and until this summer, she’d given me almost no reason to ever be suspicious of her.

She was the kind of kid who reminded me when I’d forgotten to sign a school form.

She earned straight As without anyone pushing her.

If she accidentally brought home somebody else’s pencil, she returned it the next morning.

So when she begged me to let her spend a week at scout camp with her troop, my biggest concern wasn’t that she might get into trouble.

It was whether I could handle having her away from home.

“Mom, I’m twelve,” she told me for what felt like the hundredth time.

“I know how old you are.”

“You keep acting like I’m six.”

“I’m not acting like you’re six.”

“You labeled my sunscreen.”

“Because you’ll lose it.”

She stared at me.

I stared back.

Then she reached into her backpack and pulled out the sunscreen.
