PART 3 — THE ROOM DEREK NEVER WANTED US TO SEE**

Detective Shaw stared at the photograph on Maria’s phone as though the screen had suddenly become a window into a nightmare he had spent eighteen months trying to understand.

“Everybody stay where you are.”

 

His voice was no longer conversational.

Cole noticed it immediately.

“So that name means something.”

Shaw looked toward the hidden gray door.

“It means this stopped being about a reckless grappling round five minutes ago.”

Officer Ramirez guided Martin toward the wall, his wrists secured behind him. Martin had stopped protesting. He seemed smaller now, as if whatever authority he had once possessed inside Apex Grappling had drained out of him the moment Detective Shaw recognized the name on that hard drive.

I stood beside Cole, one hand still pressed to my aching throat.

“Who is he?” I asked.

Shaw looked at me.

“Evan Mercer.”

Nobody reacted.

Nobody except Aaron.

His face went pale.

“Wait.”

Everyone turned.

Aaron stepped away from the wall.

“Evan trained here.”

Shaw’s eyes sharpened.

“When?”

“Maybe two years ago. Six months? Seven? I don’t remember exactly.”

Martin closed his eyes.

That tiny reaction told us Aaron was right.

Aaron continued.

“He was quiet. Brown hair. Worked construction, I think.”

“Electrician,” Martin muttered.

Shaw immediately faced him.

“You remember him.”

Martin said nothing.

“You told me you didn’t.”

Martin looked toward the floor.

Cole folded his arms.

“That sounds important.”

Shaw nodded.

“It is.”

He turned to Aaron.

“When did Evan leave?”

Aaron frowned.

“He didn’t exactly leave.”

“What does that mean?”

“He stopped coming.”

Maria whispered, “Like Noah.”

I felt something cold spread through my stomach.

Shaw pulled a small notebook from his jacket.

“Did anyone ever ask why?”

Aaron gave a bitter laugh.

“At this gym?”

Nobody needed him to explain.

Derek’s reputation had created a culture where disappearing members were considered weak.

Quitters.

People who couldn’t handle training.

People who “weren’t built for this.”

Shaw looked at Martin.

“What happened to Evan?”

Martin’s jaw tightened.

“I want a lawyer.”

“That’s fine.”

Shaw pointed toward the hidden door.

“But you should understand something. That photograph gave me enough to expand what we’re looking for.”

Martin swallowed.

Shaw stepped closer.

“Especially because Evan Mercer has officially been listed as a missing person for eighteen months.”

My pulse accelerated.

Cole’s expression remained unreadable, but I knew him.

His right hand had curled slowly into a fist.

Not because he was afraid.

Because he was controlling his anger.

Officer Chen returned from Martin’s office.

“Detective.”

He was holding a small external drive inside an evidence bag.

Martin’s head snapped up.

“Where did you get that?”

“Desk drawer.”

“You can’t—”

“It’s listed in the search authorization.”

Martin cursed softly.

Chen continued.

“The computer appears to have been wiping files when we entered.”

Shaw looked at Martin.

“Deleting evidence?”

“It was an automatic backup process.”

Chen shook his head.

“No. It wasn’t.”

Cole glanced toward me.

The entire atmosphere inside Apex had changed.

Thirty minutes earlier, it had been a familiar gym.

Sweat-stained mats.

Fluorescent lights.

Posters advertising tournaments.

Now every shadow seemed to hide a question.

Shaw’s radio crackled.

A dispatcher’s voice filled the silence.

Derek’s SUV had been located.

Abandoned.

Three blocks away.

Driver’s door open.

Keys gone.

No Derek.

Shaw cursed under his breath.

Cole said, “He switched transportation.”

“How do you know?”

“Because people who panic run. People who plan disappear.”

Shaw studied him.

“You really just visiting your sister?”

Cole nodded.

“That was the plan.”

For the first time that night, Shaw almost smiled.

“Some weekend.”

Then a loud metallic sound came from behind the hidden door.

Everyone froze.

Clang.

Silence.

Then another.

Clang.

Officer Ramirez looked at Shaw.

“Someone in there?”

Martin’s face went completely white.

Cole was already moving toward the wall.

Shaw raised his hand.

“Hold.”

Cole stopped.

Shaw approached Martin.

“Is there another entrance?”

Martin shook his head too quickly.

Cole noticed.

“He’s lying.”

“I’m not.”

Another sound came.

This time softer.

Three taps.

Pause.

Three taps.

Pause.

Three taps.

Maria covered her mouth.

“Oh God.”

Shaw stepped toward Martin.

“Who is behind that door?”

Martin whispered, “Nobody.”

Three more taps answered him.

Cole stared at the gray door.

“That isn’t nobody.”

Shaw radioed for additional officers and emergency personnel.

The warrant allowed entry.

But Derek had taken the key.

Officer Chen brought a pry tool from the patrol vehicle.

Martin began struggling again.

“No!”

Ramirez tightened his grip.

“Stop moving.”

“You can’t open that!”

Shaw stared at him.

“Why?”

Martin’s voice broke.

“You don’t understand what’s in there.”

“That is becoming very obvious.”

The officers forced the door.

Metal screamed against metal.

The lock bent.

One final pull—

and the door opened.

A narrow staircase descended beneath the gym.

Cold air drifted upward.

No one spoke.

Shaw went first with Chen.

Cole followed only after Shaw gave him permission.

I remained upstairs with Maria and several students.

Every second felt impossibly long.

Then someone below shouted.

“Medical!”

My stomach dropped.

Maria grabbed my hand.

Within moments, paramedics rushed past us and disappeared down the stairs.

I couldn’t breathe properly.

Ten minutes later, they brought someone up.

A man.

Thin.

Bearded.

Alive.

Very much alive.

His eyes squeezed shut against the fluorescent lights.

There were no dramatic wounds, no bl/o/od, nothing like the nightmares my imagination had produced.

But he looked exhausted.

Disoriented.

Terrified.

Detective Shaw stood beside the stretcher.

His face was unlike anything I had seen before.

“Evan?”

The man opened his eyes.

Slowly.

His lips moved.

Shaw leaned closer.

Evan whispered one word.

“Derek.”

Martin slumped against the wall.

And suddenly eighteen months of mystery had a heartbeat.

Evan Mercer was alive.

But that wasn’t the biggest shock.

As the paramedics wheeled him away, he grabbed Shaw’s sleeve.

“There’s another room.”

Shaw froze.

“What?”

Evan’s breathing quickened.

“Behind the shelves.”

Cole looked toward the stairwell.

Shaw immediately sent Chen back down.

Martin started shaking.

Actually shaking.

“No.”

Shaw turned.

“What’s in the second room?”

Martin whispered, “Nothing.”

From downstairs came Officer Chen’s voice.

“Detective!”

Shaw ran.

Cole followed.

I should have stayed upstairs.

I knew that.

Instead, I went after them.

The basement smelled like dust, rubber mats, and old concrete.

Shelves lined the walls.

Hard drives.

Paper files.

Phones.

Cameras.

Old membership folders.

Everything labeled.

At the back, Chen had moved a shelving unit aside.

Behind it was another door.

This one wasn’t locked.

Inside was something far stranger than any of us expected.

There were no prisoners.

No hidden chamber of horrors.

There were computers.

Three desks.

Dozens of monitors.

And an enormous whiteboard covered with names.

Student names.

Dates.

Dollar amounts.

Insurance companies.

Law firms.

Settlement figures.

My own name had been added recently.

Beside it:

SARAH MILLER — NEW — FAMILY CONNECTION UNKNOWN.

Cole stepped closer.

His face hardened.

Below Noah Bennett’s name was a number.

$180,000.

Below another name:

$240,000.

Then:

$95,000.

$310,000.

$125,000.

Shaw looked at Martin.

“What is this?”

Martin said nothing.

Cole understood before I did.

“This wasn’t random bullying.”

Shaw turned toward him.

Cole pointed at the board.

“Derek was choosing people.”

My skin prickled.

“For what?”

Cole’s eyes moved across the settlement numbers.

“For claims.”

Shaw exhaled slowly.

Insurance.

Lawsuits.

Manufactured i/njuries.

Apex Grappling wasn’t simply hiding Derek’s behavior.

Someone had been profiting from it.

Martin’s knees buckled.

Ramirez caught him.

Shaw stared at the board.

“And Evan found out.”

Martin finally looked up.

His face was wet with tears.

“I never wanted this.”

Evan’s voice drifted faintly from the top of the stairs.

“Yes, you did.”

Everyone turned.

The paramedics had paused because Evan had insisted on speaking before leaving.

He looked straight at Martin.

“You just didn’t think it would get this far.”

Shaw approached him carefully.

“Evan, what happened?”

Evan’s eyes moved toward the basement.

“I found the records.”

Martin whispered, “Don’t.”

“I found out Derek was deliberately hurting people so Martin could steer them toward certain attorneys and clinics.”

Shaw’s expression darkened.

Evan continued.

“Fake rehabilitation bills. Inflated treatment. Settlement splitting.”

Martin shut his eyes.

“But why keep you here?” Shaw asked.

Evan swallowed.

“Because I copied everything.”

Cole looked at him.

“Where?”

Evan gave the faintest smile.

“Somewhere Derek never found.”

Shaw leaned closer.

“Where?”

Evan’s smile disappeared.

“I’ll tell you when my sister is safe.”

Shaw frowned.

“Your sister?”

Evan’s eyes widened.

“You don’t know?”

A terrible silence followed.

Then Evan whispered:

“Derek went to get her.”

Detective Shaw moved faster than I had seen anyone move that night.

“Name.”

“Rebecca Mercer.”

“Address.”

Evan gave it.

Shaw relayed the information instantly.

Patrol units were sent.

Cole stepped toward him.

“How far?”

“Fifteen minutes.”

“At this hour?”

“Maybe twelve.”

Cole looked at me.

“You stay here.”

I almost laughed.

“No.”

“Sarah.”

“I just found out the man who choked me unconscious might have been part of an insurance cr1me operation and has disappeared after apparently going after a witness’s sister.”

“That is exactly why you stay here.”

My anger flared.

“You spent your entire life telling me not to freeze when I’m scared.”

“I told you to make smart decisions while scared.”

“And hiding inside this gym is smart?”

“Yes.”

He said it so calmly that I wanted to throw something at him.

Then he softened.

“For tonight, yes.”

I looked at his face.

The brother beneath the SEAL.

The boy who had once walked me home from school when I was twelve because three girls had decided humiliating me was funny.

The man who never made promises casually.

“I’ll be back.”

I hated those words.

Because people said them when they couldn’t guarantee anything.

Cole seemed to read my expression.

“Sarah.”

“What?”

“You called me because you needed help moving.”

Despite everything, I almost smiled.

“You showed up ten minutes early.”

“Worst timing of my life.”

“Best timing of mine.”

His expression changed.

Then he hugged me.

Quickly.

Tightly.

“I’m coming back.”

Shaw interrupted.

“Cole.”

My brother released me.

The detective gestured toward the door.

“I may regret this, but you’re riding with me.”

Officer Ramirez raised an eyebrow.

Shaw shrugged.

“He understands nervous people better than most officers I know.”

Cole nodded.

They left.

For forty minutes, the gym became unbearable.

Statements.

Questions.

Paramedics checked my throat and recommended additional medical evaluation.

I refused to leave until I knew Rebecca was safe.

Maria stayed beside me.

So did Tyler.

Aaron paced.

Martin sat handcuffed near the office.

Then his phone began ringing.

Twice.

Three times.

Officer Ramirez glanced at the screen.

“Unknown number.”

Martin’s entire body stiffened.

Ramirez looked at him.

“Derek?”

The phone rang again.

Shaw had left instructions.
