“My ex-husband turned up at the pool party with…

Jordan’s fingers shook as he took it.

Percy stepped closer.

“Jordan, what’s going on?”

He ignored her.

His eyes moved across the page.

And then they stopped.

Whatever he saw made his expression change completely.

I had spent weeks imagining this moment.

I had imagined Jordan becoming jealous.

I had imagined him realizing that I could be happy without him.

I had even imagined him regretting the cruel things he’d said about my appearance.

But I had never imagined him looking terrified.

He slowly raised his eyes toward me.

“Where did you get this?”

My smile disappeared.

That wasn’t the reaction I expected.

I looked at Clark.

He gave me the smallest nod.

“Tell him,” he said.

I swallowed.

“Tell him what?”

Jordan suddenly stepped toward me.

“Where did you get this?”

His voice was no longer mocking.

It was desperate.

I instinctively moved backward.

Clark immediately stepped between us.

“Don’t come any closer.”

Jordan stared at him.

“You have no idea what you’re getting involved in.”

Clark smiled faintly.

“Actually, I know exactly what I’m getting involved in.”

Percy snatched the letter from Jordan’s hand.

She read it.

Her expression changed almost instantly.

“What… is this?”

Jordan grabbed it back.

“Give me that.”

“No.”

For the first time, Percy looked at him differently.

Not lovingly.

Not protectively.

Suspiciously.

“What does this mean, Jordan?”

He didn’t answer.

And that was when I realized something.

The gift hadn’t been about jealousy.

It wasn’t about revenge.

Clark hadn’t brought something expensive.

He hadn’t brought something humiliating.

He had brought evidence.

Evidence of something I didn’t even know existed.

My heart began pounding.

“Clark,” I whispered, “what is happening?”

He looked at me.

“Remember when you told me you wanted him to see that you were doing fine without him?”

I nodded.

“I also told you that sometimes the truth hurts more than pretending.”

He reached into the gift box again.

This time, he pulled out a small black envelope.

He handed it to me.

My name was written across the front.

In handwriting I recognized immediately.

My hands went cold.

It was Jordan’s handwriting.

I opened it.

Inside was a single photograph.

I stared at it.

Then another.

Then another.

My breathing stopped.

They were photographs of Jordan and Percy.

But not the kind of photographs a husband would take with his mistress.

These were photographs taken secretly.

Jordan meeting someone at a hotel.

Jordan handing over an envelope.

Jordan sitting inside a car with a man I had never seen before.

And finally, a photograph of a document.

At the bottom was Jordan’s signature.

I looked at Clark.

“What is this?”

“Something your ex-husband never wanted you to see.”

Jordan suddenly shouted.

“That’s enough!”

Everyone around us turned.

The party had gone strangely quiet.

Our son was standing near the pool, watching us.

My heart broke when I saw his face.

He was supposed to be celebrating his birthday.

Part 3 — The Truth He Buried

The stranger didn’t move.

He simply stood at the edge of the patio, watching Jordan.

I had never seen a person look so terrified.

Jordan’s lips were trembling.

“How are you here?”

The stranger smiled.

“That’s a funny question.”

Clark stepped forward.

“You’ve been avoiding him for twenty years.”

The stranger looked at me.

“I’m sorry.”

I didn’t understand.

“Who are you?”

He took a slow breath.

“My name is Daniel.”

He glanced at Jordan.

“And I was the person who knew what your husband was really like before you ever married him.”

Jordan’s face hardened.

“Don’t listen to him.”

Daniel laughed bitterly.

“Still the same, aren’t you?”

“What happened twenty years ago?” I asked.

Daniel looked at me.

Then at our children.

Finally, he lowered his voice.

“Your husband didn’t meet you by accident.”

The world seemed to tilt.

“What?”

Jordan stepped forward.

“He’s lying.”

Daniel continued.

“When you were in college, Jordan was already involved in serious financial trouble. He had borrowed money from people he couldn’t repay. He was desperate.”
