PART 3
Margaret slowly turned toward him.
“Grandmother?”
She repeated the word as if she had just heard something particularly amusing.
“Interesting. You didn’t seem to remember that I was your grandmother when you sat at my birthday dinner watching your mother insult my granddaughter. You didn’t seem to remember it when you demanded control of the property I had just given her. And you certainly didn’t remember it when you threatened to divorce her because she refused.”
Nolan’s jaw tightened.
“You’re making this sound worse than it is.”
“No, Nolan. I’m finally hearing the truth without the pretty explanations.”
I stood near the stairs, unable to believe what I was witnessing.
For three years, I had been the one trying to keep the peace between Nolan and his mother. I had swallowed countless insults, accepted endless excuses, and convinced myself that marriage required patience.
But Margaret wasn’t trying to keep the peace.
She was demanding an explanation.
One of the men who had entered with her stepped forward.
“Mrs. Dawson, the documents are ready.”
Margaret nodded.
“Thank you, Daniel. Please place them on the table.”
Vivian looked at the briefcase.
“What documents?”
Margaret didn’t answer immediately.
Instead, she walked toward me and gently took my hand.
“Claire, sweetheart, I want you to sit down.”
“I’m fine, Grandma.”
“No, you’re not. And you don’t have to pretend to be.”
Those words nearly broke me.
I sat on the sofa.
Margaret placed a hand on my shoulder before turning toward the others.
“Now, before we discuss anything else, I have one question.”
She looked directly at Nolan.
“Who told you that this house belongs to you?”
Nolan frowned.
“What?”
“You heard me.”
He gave a short laugh.
“It’s my house. I bought it.”
Margaret tilted her head.
“With what money?”
The room went silent.
Nolan glanced at his mother.
Vivian immediately stepped forward.
“Margaret, I don’t see how that’s relevant.”
“Then you shouldn’t have any difficulty answering.”
Margaret gestured toward Daniel.
He opened his briefcase and removed several documents.
“Three years ago,” Margaret continued, “when Nolan’s import company was facing serious financial difficulties, he approached me for assistance.”
I turned toward Nolan.
I had never heard this before.
Margaret continued.
“His company was struggling with unpaid suppliers, outstanding loans, and several overdue business obligations. He told me he needed temporary financial assistance to keep the business operating.”
Nolan’s face became noticeably pale.
“That was a private arrangement.”
“Yes. It was.”
Margaret took a document from Daniel.
“And I provided that assistance.”
She placed the paper on the coffee table.
“One million eight hundred thousand dollars.”
My mouth fell open.
“What?”
Margaret looked at me.
“I helped him because you were getting married, Claire. I wanted you both to have a stable beginning.”
I slowly turned toward my husband.
“You told me your company had recovered because of your own hard work.”
Nolan rubbed his forehead.
“I was going to tell you.”
“When?”
He didn’t answer.
Margaret continued.
“That money was not a gift. It was a private loan with a repayment agreement. And I have been remarkably patient.”
Vivian crossed her arms.
“Surely you’re not suggesting Nolan hasn’t paid you back?”
Margaret looked at her.
“I’m not suggesting anything. I’m looking at the records.”
Daniel opened another folder.
“According to the repayment statement, only a portion of the original principal has been repaid. The remaining balance, including the agreed interest, is documented here.”
Nolan’s face reddened.
“This is ridiculous. We can discuss the loan another day.”
Margaret shook her head.
“No. Today seems appropriate. Especially since you have just threatened to divorce my granddaughter over an asset that belongs entirely to her.”
I couldn’t take my eyes off the documents.
I had believed Nolan’s company was successful.
I had believed the beautiful house, the expensive cars, and the vacations were the results of his business achievements.
But suddenly, I was beginning to wonder how much of the life I had been living was built on things I had never been told.
Then Margaret asked another question.
“Daniel, did you bring the second folder?”
“Yes, Mrs. Dawson.”
He removed a thinner blue folder.
Nolan immediately stepped forward.
“What’s that?”
Margaret looked at him.
“Something I should have investigated much earlier.”
She opened the folder.
Inside were printed financial statements, copies of bank transfers, and several pages of correspondence.
I recognized the name of Nolan’s company.
But I didn’t recognize the other names.
Margaret placed one page in front of him.
“Would you care to explain why payments from the business account were transferred to a private consulting company registered under your mother’s name?”
Vivian froze.
For the first time that evening, she looked genuinely frightened.
“That’s none of your business.”
Margaret raised an eyebrow.
“It became my business when money connected to my loan began appearing in accounts that were never disclosed to me.”
Nolan grabbed the paper.
“These are normal business expenses.”
“Then explain them.”
“They’re consulting fees.”
“Consulting for what?”
He looked down.
Nobody spoke.
Margaret leaned back.
“That’s what I thought.”
I looked at Vivian.
She had always acted as though she were the most financially sophisticated person in the family. She criticized my spending, questioned my decisions, and constantly reminded me that Nolan was the one who understood money.
Yet now she couldn’t even explain the transactions appearing under her own company’s name.
My grandmother turned toward me.
“Claire, there is something else you should know.”
I swallowed.
“What?”
“The hotel isn’t the only thing your grandfather and I left for you.”
I stared at her.
“What do you mean?”
Margaret smiled sadly.
“When your grandfather passed away, I established a separate family trust. You were named its primary beneficiary. It was designed to protect your financial independence and provide you with security regardless of what happened in your personal life.”
I felt my heart beating faster.
“Grandma, why are you telling me this now?”
“Because I wanted you to understand that you have never needed to depend on someone who makes you feel small.”
She paused.
“And because I suspect certain people have been making decisions about your future without your knowledge.”
Nolan suddenly looked up.
“What exactly are you accusing me of?”
Margaret’s expression became cold.
“I’m not accusing you of anything, Nolan. I’m asking questions. There’s a difference.”
She turned toward Daniel.
“Please give Claire the trust documents.”
Daniel handed me a sealed envelope.
My hands trembled as I opened it.
There were several pages inside, including a letter written by my grandfather.
I recognized his handwriting immediately.
My eyes filled with tears.
My dearest Claire,
If you are reading this, it means your grandmother has decided that you are ready to take control of the future we always hoped you would have.
Never confuse kindness with weakness. Never allow anyone to convince you that your worth depends on what you can give them.
You deserve to be loved for who you are, not for what you own.
I pressed the letter against my chest.
I hadn’t cried this hard since my grandfather’s funeral.
Margaret sat beside me.
“He wanted you to have choices, sweetheart.”
I nodded, unable to speak.
Then Nolan interrupted.
“This is getting out of control.”
Margaret looked at him.
“No, Nolan. What’s getting out of control is the way you and your mother have treated my granddaughter.”
Nolan pointed toward the papers.
“Fine. She can have the hotel. She can have whatever money her grandmother wants to give her. But I’m still her husband, and I deserve to be involved in decisions that affect our marriage.”
I slowly looked up.
“You’re not listening.”
He turned toward me.
“What?”
“I never said you couldn’t support me. I said I wanted to manage my own inheritance.”
“You don’t understand what you’re doing.”
“Maybe I don’t know everything about running a hotel yet. But I know enough to hire people who do.”
Vivian let out an irritated sigh.
“Honestly, Claire, you’re allowing this money to change you.”
I almost smiled.
“That’s interesting coming from someone who wanted to manage a $150 million hotel before I had even finished my birthday cake.”
Her mouth fell open.
Nolan stepped between us.
“Enough. We’re not doing this in front of everyone.”
Margaret stood.
“Actually, I think we are.”
She looked at Daniel.
“Please explain the remaining documents.”
Daniel opened the final section of his briefcase.
“There is one additional matter, Mrs. Dawson.”
He placed a document on the table.
It was a property ownership record.
I looked at the address.
It was the address of the house we were standing in.
Daniel cleared his throat.
“According to the records, the initial purchase of this property was financed through a private arrangement involving a company owned by the Dawson family trust.”
Nolan’s expression changed.
Margaret nodded.
“That’s correct.”
I turned toward her.
“Grandma?”
She gently squeezed my hand.
“Three years ago, Nolan told me he wanted to provide you with a beautiful home. He asked whether I could help arrange the financing while his company recovered.”
Nolan looked furious.
“That’s not how it happened.”
Margaret continued.
“The property was purchased through a company connected to the trust. Nolan and Claire were permitted to live there under the terms of the arrangement.”
I stared at the document.
“So the house…”
“Is not owned by Nolan personally,” Daniel explained carefully.
Vivian took a step backward.
“But Nolan has been paying the expenses.”
“Some of them,” Daniel replied. “The ownership documents are quite clear.”
Margaret looked directly at Vivian.
“You just told my granddaughter that she needed to leave because this was your son’s home.”
She paused.
“Would you like to repeat that statement?”
Vivian’s face had turned bright red.
Nolan looked as though someone had pulled the floor out from underneath him.
“This is a setup,” he muttered.
Margaret shook her head.
“No. This is paperwork.”
She turned to Daniel.
“Please prepare a complete review of the property’s ownership, expenses, and any outstanding obligations. I want everything independently verified.”
“Of course.”
Then she looked at Nolan.
“Until the review is complete, nobody is making any changes to the property or its arrangements.”
Nolan clenched his fists.
“You can’t do this to me.”
Margaret’s voice remained calm.
“I haven’t done anything to you, Nolan. I’ve simply stopped allowing you to make decisions on behalf of someone else.”
