Brother Sold Their Late Father’s Truck Without Telling His Sister – 2 Days Later, the Buyer Called About a Sealed Envelope Under the Seat

But the receipt listed Derek’s phone number.

I called my brother.

“Did you pay for Dad’s engine repairs?”

Silence.

“Where are you getting this?”

“I’m at the house. I found the receipts.”

“Then you already have your answer.”

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

“Because nobody asked.”

“Derek, this is thousands of dollars.”

“So?”

“Why would you spend that much on a truck you supposedly hated?”

He gave a humorless laugh.

“Of course Dad left you something about the truck. He always did.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“What does that mean?”

“Nothing. I have to go.”

“Did you know he wrote me a letter?”

Another silence.

“No.”

“He said you sacrificed more than I realized.”

“Well, that was nice of him.”

“Derek.”

“I said I have to go.”

He hung up.

I kept searching.

Inside the oldest binder, I found a folded sheet dated 12 years earlier.

It was an agreement between Dad and a man interested in buying the pickup.

The price was $5,500.

Dad had signed it.

But the sale never happened.

Behind it was a bank deposit slip showing $5,500 deposited into Dad’s account three days later.

In the margin, Dad had written, “Derek’s savings.”

I sat down.
