Brother Sold Their Late Father’s Truck Without Telling His Sister – 2 Days Later, the Buyer Called About a Sealed Envelope Under the Seat

That was the deal. We shook on it.

Last Saturday, I drove over to water Dad’s plants and noticed the garage door was open. The space where the truck always sat was empty. Just an oil stain on the concrete.

I called Derek immediately.

He picked up, sounding almost bored.

“Oh, that. I sold it. Some guy from two towns over gave me eight grand cash. It was just sitting there, Laura. Rusting away. Dad wouldn’t have wanted it wasted.”

“We had an agreement,” I said, barely able to get the words out.

“Relax. You’ll get your half,” he said, and hung up.

I sat on the garage floor for almost an hour, staring at the empty spot, furious and grieving all over again.

Two days later, my phone rang from a number I didn’t recognize. A man’s voice, polite but strangely cautious.

“Hi, is this Laura? I bought your dad’s truck from your brother. I’m really sorry to bother you, but I was cleaning it out last night, and I found something taped underneath the driver’s seat.”

He paused.

“It’s a sealed envelope, and I’m not sure why, but it has your name written on the front.”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

“Are you sure it’s my name?”

“Laura. Written in blue ink.”

“Please don’t open it.”

“I wasn’t planning to. That’s why I called.”

His name was Ben. He’d found my number on an emergency contact card in the glove compartment. We arranged to meet the next morning.
