Brother Sold Their Late Father’s Truck Without Telling His Sister – 2 Days Later, the Buyer Called About a Sealed Envelope Under the Seat

Near the end, he asked me to tell Derek something.

“Tell your brother I knew. Tell him I was proud of the man he became, even when I was too stubborn to say it.”

I stared at those words.

Dad had never struggled to express affection toward me. He hugged me whenever I visited and told me he loved me before hanging up the phone.

What had been different with Derek?

Before leaving, I asked Ben whether he’d consider selling the truck back.

He hesitated.

“I just bought it, Laura. I’ve already ordered parts for it.”

“I understand.”

He studied my face.

“Give me some time to think about it.”

I thanked him and drove straight to Dad’s house.

His workshop was exactly as he’d left it. Wrenches hung above the bench. His stained coffee mug still sat beside the radio.

Dad kept records of every repair he’d made.

I found three thick binders beneath the workbench.

At first, everything looked familiar.

Then I found a receipt from 2014.

Replacement engine components. Nearly $1,600.

“Customer name: Derek.”

Another receipt showed transmission work. Derek’s name appeared again.

Then a third.

Over several years, he’d purchased thousands of dollars’ worth of parts.

One receipt covered engine work Dad had proudly shown me during Thanksgiving in 2017.

I remembered standing beside him while he explained how he’d rebuilt it.
