My 6-year-old son suddenly rushed into the supermarket where I work, three miles from our home. “What happened?” I asked. Crying and out of breath, he shouted, “Mom! Come home now! Dad is…” I drove home immediately—and froze when I saw several police cars parked outside our house.

For several seconds, I couldn’t process what she had said.

Then I laughed.

Not because it was funny.

Because it sounded impossible.

“My husband?”

“Yes.”

“No. He’s married. We’ve been married eleven years.”

Hayes said nothing.

That silence hurt more than an argument would have.

“Did you find something?”
