My 6-year-old son suddenly rushed into the supermarket where I work, three miles from our home. “What happened?” I asked. Crying and out of breath, he shouted, “Mom! Come home now! Dad is…” I drove home immediately—and froze when I saw several police cars parked outside our house.

My six-year-old son came rushing through the automatic doors of the supermarket at 2:17 on a Tuesday afternoon.

“Mom!”

I was scanning groceries at register four when I suddenly heard him shout.

I looked up and almost dropped the carton of eggs in my hands.

“Ethan?”

He was standing ten feet away, barefoot, wearing his dinosaur T-shirt and gray shorts. His knees were dusty, his face was bright red, and tears were running down his cheeks.
