I sent my parents $550 every Friday so they could “live comfortably.” On my daughter’s birthday, they didn’t even come, and then my father said, “We don’t count your family the same.” I opened my banking app, stopped their weekly support, and typed a message that would land harder than any birthday song.

Danny answered, “I stayed out of it for three years.”

Then he sent another message.

“I watched her support your life while she struggled with her own. I should have said something.”

I stared at the screen.

That was the first time someone in my family had acknowledged what had really happened.
