I sent my parents $550 every Friday so they could “live comfortably.” On my daughter’s birthday, they didn’t even come, and then my father said, “We don’t count your family the same.” I opened my banking app, stopped their weekly support, and typed a message that would land harder than any birthday song.

The screenshot Danny sent me showed a message Dad had sent him three months earlier.

I read it once. Then twice.

Dad had written: “Sarah will keep sending the $550. She always does. Don’t tell her what we’re using it for.”

Below it was Mom’s response.

“Especially not about the trip. She’ll turn it into another one of her family lectures.”
