They Thought I’d Pay the $4,386 Bill—They Never Knew Grandma Had a Plan

My father froze.

“What instructions?”

The manager looked directly at him.

“Instructions regarding payment.”

Nobody spoke.

Alejandro slowly put his wineglass down.

My aunt stopped chewing.

One of my cousins whispered, “What?”

The manager continued.

“When the reservation was made three days ago, an individual contacted the restaurant claiming to be authorized to charge all dining expenses to Ms. Elena.”

My father stared at me.

“That was me.”

“I assumed so,” I said.

His face changed.

“What are you talking about?”

The manager looked at his tablet again.

“Your name was provided.”

My father’s confidence returned.

“Then what’s the problem?”

“The problem,” the manager said, “is that Ms. Elena contacted us this afternoon and informed us that she had never authorized anyone to charge her personal account.”

Silence.

My father slowly turned toward me.

“You called them?”

“Yes.”

“When?”

“Before dinner.”

He laughed.

Not because anything was funny.

Because he didn’t know what else to do.

“So you knew?”

“I knew enough.”

He shook his head.

“This is ridiculous.”

“No,” I said quietly. “What’s ridiculous is that you invited sixteen people to an expensive restaurant and assumed I’d pay for everything without asking me.”

My mother suddenly spoke.

“Elena, don’t embarrass us.”

I looked at her.

“You brought sixteen people here.”

She glanced around the table.

“We thought this was a family dinner.”

“It was.”

“And families help each other.”

“Families also ask before spending someone else’s money.”

Her mouth opened.

Then closed.

The manager remained beside us.

My father pointed toward the check.

“Fine. She doesn’t want to pay? I’ll pay.”
