They Thought I’d Pay the $4,386 Bill—They Never Knew Grandma Had a Plan

PART 3

My father immediately leaned forward.

“There’s no need. She’s with us.”

The manager looked at him.

“I understand, sir.”

Then he looked back at me.

“But the matter concerns Ms. Elena specifically.”

My father frowned.

“What matter?”

The manager did not answer him.

Instead, he waited.

I stood.

My mother grabbed my wrist.

“Where are you going?”

“To speak with him.”

Her fingers tightened.

“You don’t need to go anywhere.”

I gently pulled my hand free.

“Actually, Mom, I do.”

I followed the manager several steps away from the table.

He lowered his voice.

“Are you certain you want me to proceed?”

“Yes.”

“You understand that once I do this, there won’t be any ambiguity?”

“I understand.”

“And you’re not responsible for the bill?”

I looked over my shoulder.

Sixteen people were still watching us.

My father looked angry.

Alejandro looked confused.

My mother looked frightened.

I turned back to the manager.

“No,” I said quietly. “I’m not.”

He nodded.

“Then we’re ready.”

We returned to the table.

My father immediately stood halfway from his chair.

“What is going on?”

The manager remained calm.

“Mr. Bennett, before we process this check, there are several things we need to clarify.”

“Clarify what?”

“The reservation.”

My father’s forehead wrinkled.

“What about it?”

The manager glanced at the tablet in his hand.

“This reservation was made under Ms. Elena’s name.”

My father’s expression hardened.

“Yes. Because she’s family.”

The manager continued.

“She was also listed as the authorized host.”

My mother smiled.

“Exactly.”

The manager nodded.

“That is why we contacted her when certain instructions were added to the reservation.”
