“My Son Tried to Take My House—He Never Knew I Had Already Sold It”

PART 3

That sentence almost made me laugh.

“No right?”

I set my cup down carefully.

“Greg, this was my house. Walter built it. I lived here for forty-seven years. I paid the taxes, the insurance, the repairs, and every mortgage payment until there was nothing left to pay. When your father died, I was still the owner.”

Greg opened his mouth.

I raised one finger.

“Let me finish.”

For the first time that morning, he did.

“You moved into my house without asking. You took my bedroom. Your wife started calling my home hers. You took three hundred dollars from my pension every month. Then I heard you planning to put me into a nursing home so you could sell the house.”

Dana immediately pointed at me.

“That conversation was private.”

“So was my deed.”

Emily almost smiled.

Dana turned on her.

“You stay out of this.”

Emily’s expression changed.

“No.”

Just one word.

Quiet.

Firm.

“No.”

Dana blinked.

Emily placed the blue folder on the kitchen table.

“I stayed out of your lives for years because my father made it clear I wasn’t wanted. I stayed out when he stopped answering my calls. I stayed out when he told people I was irresponsible. I stayed out when Grandma was the only person in this family who remembered my birthday.”

She looked at me.

“I didn’t stay out when she needed me.”

Greg swallowed.

“Emily, you don’t understand what happened between your mother and me.”

“I understand enough.”

“No, you don’t.”

“I understand that you stopped paying child support three months before Mom died.”
