The Voice From the Cockpit Changed Our Surprise Before Takeoff

If I was being truthful, part of me had done the same thing.

I knew about the training.

I knew about the difficult schedules in Brandon’s early years.

I knew about cheap apartments, long drives, and taking whatever work he could get while trying to build a career.

But I had never heard the story Brandon told that airplane.

Years earlier, while he was still training, Brandon had reached a point where he was ready to quit.

His father had died during that period.

Brandon didn’t describe the details over the public-address system.

He only said grief had rearranged everything he thought mattered.

He stopped sleeping properly.

He missed training.

He stopped answering calls.

Money was already tight, and suddenly flying felt like an expensive dream belonging to somebody else.

The man sitting near the front had been his instructor then.

And apparently, he had noticed.

One morning, instead of simply marking Brandon absent again, the instructor showed up where Brandon was staying.
