They Stole My $12.4 Billion Strategy—Until the Chairman Asked One Question

Daniel’s face went pale.

“I received them from the team.”

“Which team member?”

Daniel said nothing.

Richard waited.

Daniel looked toward Victor.

Victor said quietly:

“Daniel.”

It wasn’t an answer.

Richard closed the folder.

Then he asked the question that changed everything.

“Ethan, how many versions of this strategy exist?”

I answered immediately.

“Thirty-seven major versions.”

Victor’s head snapped toward me.

Richard raised an eyebrow.

“Thirty-seven?”

“Yes.”

“Do you have them?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

“At home.”

Richard looked at the CFO.

“Can we retrieve them?”

The CFO nodded slowly.

“If they’re company records.”

“They are.”

Richard looked at me.

“Bring them tomorrow.”

Victor stepped forward.

“Richard, I don’t think that’s necessary.”

Richard turned.

“I wasn’t asking you.”

Victor stopped.

Richard looked back at me.

“And Ethan?”

“Yes?”

“Bring every version.”

I nodded.

“Understood.”

The meeting ended twenty-three minutes later.

Daniel didn’t speak to me as we left.

Victor did.

He caught up with me in the hallway.

“What the hell was that?”

I stopped.

“I answered the chairman’s questions.”

“You embarrassed the department.”

“No.”

I looked directly at him.

“I didn’t embarrass anyone.”

His face tightened.

“You knew what Richard was going to ask.”

“No.”

“You deliberately made Daniel look incompetent.”

I almost laughed.

“I didn’t make him say he didn’t understand the model.”

Victor stared at me.

“You’re playing a dangerous game.”

I held his gaze.

“No.”

My voice remained calm.

“I’ve spent three years playing the safe game.”

He didn’t respond.

I walked away.

Lucy was waiting near the elevators.

She had watched everything through the glass.

When she saw me, she said nothing.

She simply followed me into the elevator.

The doors closed.

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

“Did you really say you didn’t understand your own model?”

“Yes.”

She started laughing.

Not loudly.
