They Stole My $12.4 Billion Strategy—Until the Chairman Asked One Question

He didn’t.

He had simply learned that nobody would ask him questions he couldn’t answer.

I looked back at Richard.

“I worked on the model.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

I took a breath.

“Yes.”

Richard nodded once.

“Did you build it?”

“Yes.”

Daniel immediately interrupted.

“Richard, I think there’s some confusion here—”

Richard raised one hand.

Daniel stopped.

“Mr. Carter, I will ask you to let Mr. North answer.”

Daniel sat down.

Richard turned toward me.

“Why is your name not on this document?”

I looked at the cover.

“I don’t know.”

Victor finally spoke.

“Richard, that’s an administrative issue.”

Richard’s eyes hardened.

“Victor.”

The room went quiet again.

“Don’t insult me.”

Victor stopped talking.

Richard looked back at the document.

“Who approved the final authorship?”

Victor didn’t answer.

The CFO shifted in his chair.

The general counsel looked toward the table.

Finally, Victor said:

“I did.”

Richard nodded.

“Why?”

Victor glanced at me.

“He was part of the team.”

“So?”

“Daniel was leading the strategic presentation.”

“That’s not what I asked.”

Victor’s expression became defensive.

“Daniel is the person responsible for presenting the strategy to the executive committee.”

Richard’s eyes narrowed.

“Responsible for presenting it.”

“Yes.”

“Not responsible for creating it.”

Victor hesitated.

“That was collaborative.”

Richard looked around the table.

“Apparently we have a different definition of collaborative.”

Nobody laughed.

Then Richard opened the folder in front of him.

He pulled out a printed page.

“I have something interesting.”

He placed it on the table.

It was one of my earliest drafts.

My name was at the bottom.

Ethan North.

Version 0.3.

Date: February 17.

Richard pointed to a paragraph.

“This language appears almost word for word in the final plan.”

Daniel looked down.

Richard continued.

“This paragraph too.”

Another page.

“And this.”

Another.

“And the entire risk framework here.”

He looked directly at Daniel.

“Where did you get these?”
