My 13-Year-Old Hid His Dishwashing Job From Me, but One Phone Call From His Boss Changed Everything

“I think my phone call gave you the wrong impression.”

I stared at him.

“I’ve been trying to figure out how to tell you for weeks.”

He placed one hand gently on Evan’s shoulder.

“Your son hasn’t done anything bad.”

I looked at Evan.

Then at the crying woman.

Sal continued.

“He’s been doing something I’ve never seen most adults do.”

“I don’t understand.”

Sal took a breath.

“Every Saturday, Evan works in my kitchen.”

I nodded.

“I pay him sixty dollars.”

“Yes.”

“And every Saturday, immediately after I give him the money, do you know what he does?”

I slowly shook my head.

Sal looked toward the woman in the booth.

“He gives it away.”

For a moment, I couldn’t speak.

The woman’s name was Carla.

She had two young children.

A boy around six.

A little girl around four.

Her husband had left.

She had lost her job.

She had fallen behind on rent.

One of her children had asthma, and even keeping his inhaler filled had become difficult.

Carla sometimes brought the children to Sal’s diner because it was warm.

Sal would quietly give them fries or something small to eat without charging them.

Evan noticed.

Of course he noticed.

He noticed everything.

He saw Carla counting coins before ordering.

He saw her splitting a single plate between two children.

He heard the boy coughing.

And most importantly, he recognized the expression on Carla’s face.

He had seen it before.
