My Neighbor Borrowed My Backyard for a Birthday Party—But When I Came Home, I Found a Massive Hole… and a Secret Buried Beneath My House

“Edwin.”

“You knew?”

He closed his eyes.

“My father buried it.”

I sat speechless.

Orson asked the nurse to leave us alone.

Then he began telling me a story he had apparently carried for decades.

In 1958, Edwin Pike had been a land surveyor.

Developers wanted to purchase farmland surrounding the town because they believed valuable mineral deposits ran beneath it.

Edwin discovered something during his surveys: several powerful investors had quietly manipulated boundary lines to steal land from families who couldn’t afford lawyers.

Rather than destroy the evidence, Edwin copied everything.

Maps.

Original deeds.

Signed agreements.

Ownership records.

He placed the originals and his journals inside the steel container.

“But why bury it?”

Orson’s eyes filled with tears.

“Because two weeks after he exposed them… my father disappeared.”

I stopped breathing.

“What?”

“He was declared missing. Everyone believed he’d run away.”

Orson shook his head.

“He didn’t.”

“You think he was murdered?”

“I’ve believed that for sixty-eight years.”

He reached into the drawer beside his chair and removed an old photograph.

A younger Edwin Pike stood beside the apple tree that used to grow near my fence.

Behind him, barely visible, was the exact corner of my backyard.

The detective had been right.

The container had never been random.

It had been hidden on purpose.
