My Neighbor Borrowed My Backyard for a Birthday Party—But When I Came Home, I Found a Massive Hole… and a Secret Buried Beneath My House

Another document showed ownership interests in mineral rights across several counties.

None of it made sense.

“I don’t understand any of this.”

“You’re not expected to.”

She paused.

“But our financial crimes unit does.”

The Phone Call Bennett Never Expected

Later that evening, the detective shared something they had recovered from the storage facility.

Security cameras had recorded Bennett entering the unit at 5:42 a.m. Sunday.

He was alone.

For exactly seventeen minutes.

When he left, he made one phone call.

The audio wasn’t clear enough to hear Bennett, but investigators had obtained the other side from a court-authorized recording tied to a separate fraud investigation.

A man answered.

“Did you get it?”

Bennett replied.

“Yes.”

“Open it?”

“No. Too risky.”

“Good. Bring it straight here.”

Then came the sentence that made every hair on my arms stand up.

“After seventy years, nobody even knows it belongs to them.”

The detective stopped the recording.

“Belongs to who?” I whispered.

“We’re hoping you can help answer that.”

Orson Pike’s Secret

The following morning, I drove to the assisted-living community where Orson Pike lived.

He was ninety-one now, thinner than I remembered, but his eyes were remarkably sharp.

When I told him about Bennett, the hole, and the container, he became so still that I worried he hadn’t heard me.

Finally, he whispered one word.
