My Neighbor Borrowed My Backyard for a Birthday Party—But When I Came Home, I Found a Massive Hole… and a Secret Buried Beneath My House

“So Bennett knew this was buried here?”

“That’s what we’re trying to determine.”

I looked again at the photographs.

“Why would someone bury family journals?”

The detective folded her hands.

“We don’t think the journals were the objective.”

She pointed to the photograph of the safe.

“We think the safe was.”

The Safe

By Tuesday afternoon, the forensic team had managed to remove the bolts and crack the safe open.

The detective called me immediately.

Her voice sounded different this time.

“Ms. Voss… could you come to the station?”

I drove there with my stomach tied in knots.

Inside the evidence room, the blue container sat beneath bright fluorescent lights.

Seeing it in person felt surreal.

This enormous thing had been hidden beneath the exact patch of grass where I drank coffee every morning.

A technician carefully opened the small safe.

Inside were velvet envelopes.

Not cash.

Not diamonds.

Documents.

The first envelope contained original property deeds dating back to 1919.

The second held stock certificates from companies that had long since merged into larger corporations.

The third contained handwritten letters tied together with a faded green ribbon.

The detective watched my expression.

“These aren’t ordinary family papers.”

“What are they?”

She handed me a pair of gloves.

Inside one envelope was a certificate representing thousands of shares in a railroad company that no longer existed under that name.
