My Neighbor Borrowed My Backyard for a Birthday Party—But When I Came Home, I Found a Massive Hole… and a Secret Buried Beneath My House

Someone Was Watching My House

That night, I returned home emotionally exhausted.

Police tape still surrounded the hole.

As I made tea, headlights swept across my kitchen wall.

A black SUV slowed almost to a stop outside my house.

It didn’t park.

It simply idled.

Then drove away.

I told myself it was coincidence.

Until it came back twenty minutes later.

This time, I stepped behind the curtain.

The windows were tinted too dark to see inside.

The SUV paused directly across from my mailbox.

Then it left again.

I called the detective immediately.

She didn’t dismiss my concern.

Instead she asked one question.

“Did it have roof rails?”

I blinked.

“Yes.”

There was silence.

Then she said, “Don’t go outside.”

Within twelve minutes, two patrol cars arrived.

The officers searched the neighborhood but found nothing.

As one officer walked back toward his cruiser, he glanced at my damaged backyard.

Then he looked at me.

“Ms. Voss… I don’t think Bennett was digging for treasure.”

“What do you mean?”

“I think he was retrieving evidence.”

Before I could respond, the detective called again.

Her voice was urgent.

“We’ve identified the man Bennett phoned.”

“Who is he?”

She took a slow breath.

“His name is Conrad Mercer.”

I waited.

“He’s the grandson of one of the developers Edwin Pike accused in 1958.”

My knees nearly gave out.

The detective continued.

“And there’s one more problem.”

“What?”

“The journals mention a second container.”

I turned slowly toward the enormous square hole in my backyard.

Because for the first time…

I realized Bennett had only dug up half of what had been buried beneath my home.

PART 4

At 6:14 the next morning, I woke to the sound of an engine idling behind my fence. I looked through the bedroom window and saw the same black SUV parked in the alley, its headlights off. Someone was watching the hole in my backyard.

I didn’t go outside.

The detective’s warning echoed in my head: Don’t go outside.

Instead, I quietly dialed Detective Elena Shaw.

She answered before the second ring.

“Stay where you are.”

“You knew it might come back?”
