They Shut the Door on My 11-Year-Old Daughter—They Never Knew What That House Would Cost Them

“We’ll find it.”

“And if they borrowed money against the house?”

“Then we’ll determine whether the lender had notice of the trust restrictions.”

I didn’t know what to say.

Martin continued.

“But there is something else.”

“What?”

“Your grandmother asked me to check the county records for any recent filings.”

“Did you find something?”

“Yes.”

My heart started beating faster.

“What?”

“A document was recorded eleven months ago.”

“What kind of document?”

“A lien.”

I stared at the wall.

“A lien against the house?”

“Yes.”

“Who filed it?”

He hesitated.

“That’s where things become more complicated.”

I sat down.

“Tell me.”

“The lien was connected to a private loan.”

“Whose loan?”

“Your father’s.”

I felt a coldness move through my chest.

“My father borrowed money?”

“Yes.”

“How much?”

“Approximately eighty-four thousand dollars.”

I couldn’t speak.

Eighty-four thousand.

That wasn’t a small emergency loan.

“What did he use it for?”

“We’re still investigating.”

I rubbed my forehead.

“Could it have been for the house?”

“Possibly.”

“Repairs?”

“Possibly.”

“Medical bills?”

“We don’t know.”

“Then what do we know?”

Martin answered carefully.

“We know the loan exists.”

“We know the property was listed as security.”

“And we know the paperwork appears to have been filed without the authorization required by your grandmother’s trust.”

I looked at Emma again.

“Why would they need to keep her out?”

Martin didn’t answer immediately.

Then he said:

“Because if the trust attorney entered the house tonight, or if your daughter had gone inside and seen certain things, you might have discovered the financial situation much sooner.”

My breathing slowed.

“What things?”

“We don’t know yet.”

I stood.

“Then I’m going there.”

“No.”

Martin’s answer was immediate.

“Don’t.”

“Why?”

“Because if there are financial documents or other evidence inside, you don’t want your parents accusing you of interfering with anything.”
