I Said “All Good” When My Parents Chose My Sister—They Had No Idea What Came Next

“Brooke told them I wasn’t having Christmas.”

Megan’s expression changed.

“Why would she do that?”

“I don’t know.”

But even as I said it, I knew there had to be a reason.

And the next morning, I found out what it was.

At 8:12 a.m., my phone rang.

It was our neighbor, Linda.

Linda lived two houses down from my parents.

She was one of those people who knew everyone in the neighborhood and somehow knew everything before the people involved did.

“Miranda?”

“Good morning.”

“Are you sitting down?”

I smiled faintly.

“Should I be?”

“I just got off the phone with your mother.”

That got my attention.

“What happened?”

Linda hesitated.

“She’s upset.”

“About what?”

“She asked me where I saw your house.”

My eyebrows pulled together.

“What?”

“She called me first thing this morning.”

“Why?”

“I told her I had seen your house on television.”

I said nothing.

Linda continued.

“She asked, ‘What house?’”

I stared at the Christmas tree.

Then Linda said something I would remember for the rest of my life.

“She didn’t know.”

“Didn’t know what?”

“That the house they saw on television was yours.”

I sat down.

“Linda…”

“I thought they knew. Everyone around here assumed they knew.”

“They didn’t.”

“I figured that out.”

“What exactly did you tell her?”

Linda sighed.

“I told her about the special. I told her how beautiful the place looked. I said I couldn’t believe she and your father hadn’t been there for the filming.”

My throat tightened.

“And what did she say?”

Linda lowered her voice.

“She asked me where I saw it.”

“And you told her?”

“I said, ‘At Miranda’s house.’”

Silence.

“Then,” Linda continued, “your mother went completely quiet.”

I could almost picture it.

My mother’s face.

The confusion.

The realization.

The shame.

“What happened next?”

“She asked me if I was sure.”

Linda paused.

“Then she said, ‘Wait… you honestly don’t know?’”

I closed my eyes.

That was the sentence.

The sentence from the night before.

The question that had started everything.

Linda continued.

“Your mother asked me what I meant.”

“And?”

“I told her.”

“What?”

“That your house was the one featured on the special.”
