“My Uncle Thought I Was Asleep… But I Was Recording Everything”

PART 5

I stared at the photograph until my eyes burned. My mother. Robert.

And me. A baby in their arms. The words on the back felt impossible.

“The night Sophia disappeared, Isabella Beltran helped us take her.” For the first time in my life, I didn’t know who the villain was. Robert had lied.

But so had my mother. And the person I trusted most had been carrying a secret for twenty years. I drove straight to the hospital.

I didn’t call first. I didn’t warn her. I needed to see her face when I asked the question.

When I entered her room, she immediately knew something was wrong. She looked at the photograph in my hand. And the color disappeared from her face.

“Mom…” Her eyes filled with tears. I placed the photograph on the bed. “Tell me the truth.”

She looked away. That hurt more than any confession. Because silence was an answer.

“Were you there that night?” Her hands started shaking. I grabbed the notebook and placed it in front of her.

“Write.” For a long time, she couldn’t move. Then slowly… She picked up the pen.

One sentence. “Yes.” My heart broke.

“Why?” She cried. The tears fell onto the paper.

She wrote: “Because I thought I was saving you.” I stared at her. “Saving me?”

She nodded. Then she wrote: “Robert was going to take you whether I agreed or not.” I didn’t understand.

“What?” She continued. “Your father discovered the truth about Saint Helena.

He found the archive. He found the names.” Her hand shook.

“Robert knew your father would expose everything.” I swallowed. “And then?”

My mother closed her eyes. “Robert planned to remove you.” The room became silent.
