My Stepmother Banned Me From My Father’s Funeral—She Didn’t Know I Owned His Grave

He looked at his mother.

“Is it true?”

Bonnie didn’t answer.

“Mom.”

She folded her arms.

“Your father was confused near the end.”

The sentence landed like a slap.

Adam looked at me.

“Did Grandpa’s cemetery lady show you the deed?”

I nodded.

He walked over.

“Can I see it?”

Mrs. Ostrander handed him the photocopy.

He studied it for nearly a minute.

Then he looked at the signature.

“Dad signed this in 1998.”

He swallowed.

“That wasn’t dementia.”

Bonnie’s face hardened.

“Sit down.”

Instead, Adam turned toward the mourners.

“My dad visited Tracy every Sunday.”

The room shifted.

Bonnie whispered sharply, “Adam.”

“No. You told everyone they hadn’t spoken in years.”

He looked at me with sad eyes.

“I used to hear him leave the house with tomatoes every August.”

Mrs. Ostrander smiled faintly.

Adam continued.

“He wasn’t golfing.”

Bonnie closed her eyes.

For the first time, I realized everyone else had known pieces of the truth.

No one had known the whole picture.
