“My 10-Year-Old Daughter Tested Positive for Pregnancy—Then the Truth About Her Father Was Revealed”

“Dependent?”

“He wanted to become the parent who could ‘fix’ her medical problems.”

I felt sick.

“He created the problem so he could become the solution.”

Detective Harris nodded.

“That’s one interpretation investigators are examining.”

I looked at the folder.

“How?”

“He exaggerated her symptoms to Dr. Mercer.”

“Why?”

“He told her Sophie had severe hormonal abnormalities.”

“But she didn’t.”

“Correct.”

“So why did Dr. Mercer believe him?”

Detective Harris looked uncomfortable.

“She had a financial relationship with him.”

“How much?”

“More than $40,000 over the past year.”

I stared at the wall.

“And the notebook?”

“He recorded everything.”

“What everything?”

“Her symptoms. Her weight. Her medications. Her reactions.”

He paused.

“And notes about how she behaved after visits.”

My stomach turned.

“What kind of notes?”

He opened the notebook.

One sentence had been highlighted.

I read it.

Sophie is beginning to trust me more than her mother.

I couldn’t breathe.

Another line:

She asks me before telling her anything now.

Then:

If I continue, she will eventually believe I am the only person who understands what she needs.

I pushed the notebook away.

“He was manipulating her.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“We’re still trying to establish his ultimate motive.”

Then Detective Harris placed another document on the table.

“This may explain it.”

I looked down.

It was a legal document.

A life-insurance policy.

Sophie’s name was listed as the insured.

Eric was the beneficiary.

I stared at the page.

“No.”

Detective Harris nodded grimly.

“The policy was increased six months ago.”

“How much?”

“One million dollars.”

My hands went numb.

“One million?”

“Yes.”

I looked at the date.

Six months ago.

After the first treatments.

After the symptoms began.

After he started tracking her.

I whispered:

“He knew.”

Detective Harris didn’t answer.

He didn’t have to.

But then something didn’t make sense.

If Eric wanted money, why had he taken Sophie to doctors?

Why give her a substance that could make her sick?

Why document everything?

Why create a medical trail?

Detective Harris explained.

“Because he wanted everything to look natural.”

My stomach turned.

“He wanted people to think she was sick.”

“Yes.”

“So the insurance company would pay?”

“Potentially.”

“And the tumor?”
