My Ex-Husband Came Back Begging for Another Chance—But the Secret Behind My House Changed Everything

And everything about his expression changed.

The confidence disappeared.

The color drained from his face.

He didn’t answer.

The phone stopped.

Then rang again.

Daniel noticed.

“Who is it?”

“Nobody.”

The phone rang a third time.

Lucas leaned forward.

“That’s a lot of nothing calling.”

Robert stood abruptly.

“I need to take this.”

He walked toward the hallway.

Daniel followed him.

“Outside.”

Robert stopped.

“What?”

“If it’s private, take it outside.”

Robert stared at him.

Then he walked onto the porch.

Daniel followed.

The glass door closed behind them.

I watched through the window.

Robert answered.

His voice was low.

I couldn’t hear everything.

But I heard one sentence.

“No. I told you I would handle it.”

My stomach tightened.

Daniel heard it too.

Robert turned away from the house.

“Yes, I know.”

A pause.

Then:

“She can’t know yet.”

I froze.

Marisol looked at me.

“What did he just say?”

I didn’t answer.

Robert continued.

“I came here for a reason.”

Daniel’s body went rigid.

Robert looked toward our house.

Toward me.

And for a brief second, our eyes met through the glass.

He looked terrified.

Not guilty.

Not embarrassed.

Terrified.

Then he whispered:

“If Elena finds out what happened, everything is over.”

He hung up.

Daniel opened the door.

“Dad.”

Robert turned.

“What?”

“What happened?”

“Nothing.”

“You said Mom can’t know.”

Robert didn’t answer.

Daniel stepped closer.

“What can’t she know?”

Robert looked past him.

At me.

And whatever he saw on my face made him realize there was no way to escape anymore.

He slowly walked back inside.

I put the coffee mug down.

“What can’t I know, Robert?”

He opened his mouth.

Closed it.

Then opened it again.

“I didn’t come here because I wanted you back.”

The room went completely silent.

Marisol stood.

Lucas stopped chewing.

Daniel folded his arms.

I felt something cold move through my chest.

“Then why are you here?”

Robert looked at me.

“I came because I’m in trouble.”

I stared at him.

“What kind of trouble?”

He swallowed.

“Financial.”

I almost laughed.

But something in his face stopped me.

“What’s wrong?”

He sat down.

His hands were shaking.

“I owe people money.”

“How much?”

He didn’t answer.

“Robert.”

He looked at me.

“Three hundred and eighty thousand dollars.”

Lucas nearly dropped his sandwich.
