My Ex-Husband Came Back Begging for Another Chance—But the Secret Behind My House Changed Everything

Robert looked toward me.

“Elena knows I regret those things.”

“No,” Daniel said. “Mom knows you regret being alone.”

That hit harder than anything I could have said.

Robert’s face reddened.

“You’re an angry young man.”

“And you’re avoiding the question.”

“Daniel,” I said softly.

He turned toward me.

I shook my head.

“Let him speak.”

Robert looked at all four of us.

Then he finally said:

“I made mistakes. I admit that.”

Lucas came back from the kitchen holding a sandwich.

“Which ones?”

Robert stared at him.

“All of them.”

Lucas nodded.

“That’s a lot.”

“Lucas.”

“I’m just asking.”

Robert sat back down.

“I know I hurt all of you.”

Marisol sat beside me.

“Then why are you here?”

Robert rubbed his palms together.

“Because I want to fix it.”

Daniel leaned against the wall.

“Fix what?”

“Our family.”

Marisol laughed once.

“Our family didn’t break because Mom stopped loving you.”

Robert looked at her.

“It broke because you left.”

His eyes moved from one child to another.

For the first time since he entered the house, he looked genuinely ashamed.

Then he looked at me.

“Elena, I know I don’t deserve another chance.”

“No,” I said. “You don’t.”

He flinched.

“But I also know,” I continued, “that people can change.”

Robert’s eyes lifted.

There was hope in them.

Too much hope.

Because he had misunderstood me.

“I’ve changed too,” I said.

He stared.

“What does that mean?”

“It means I don’t need you anymore.”

Silence.

The kind of silence that doesn’t hurt.

The kind that feels like freedom.

Robert looked down.

“I know.”

“No,” I said. “I don’t think you do.”

I stood and walked toward the kitchen.

For two years, I had imagined this moment.

Not him returning.

That part had never mattered.

I had imagined the moment when he would finally understand that the woman he abandoned no longer existed.

And I wanted him to understand it without shouting.

Without revenge.

Without cruelty.

Just the truth.

I opened the refrigerator.

“Coffee?”

Robert stared at me.

“What?”

“I’m making more.”

He almost smiled.

“Sure.”

Marisol looked at me.

I could see the question in her eyes.

Are you really going to make him coffee?

I winked.

Then I turned toward the counter.

But before I could pour anything, Robert’s phone rang.

He looked at the screen.
