My Ex-Husband Came Back Begging for Another Chance—But the Secret Behind My House Changed Everything

PART 3

Robert’s expression changed.

“You’re calling the boys?”

“They live here too.”

“They don’t need to be involved in this.”

Marisol raised an eyebrow.

“You walked into our house uninvited and announced that you want Mom back. I think the family gets a seat at the table.”

I almost laughed again.

Robert stood.

“I should go.”

“No,” Marisol said.

He stopped.

She pointed toward the sofa.

“Sit.”

There was something about the way she said it that made Robert actually obey.

I stared at my daughter.

She looked at me.

“What?”

“Nothing.”

“You’re smiling.”

“I’m proud.”

“Good.”

A minute later, the front door opened.

Daniel walked in first.

He was wearing dark jeans, a gray sweater, and the expression of a man who had received a message saying, Emergency: Dad has returned from the dead.

Behind him came Lucas, carrying a bag of breakfast sandwiches.

He stopped when he saw Robert.

“Oh.”

Then he looked at me.

“Should I put these in the fridge?”

“Yes.”

“Good.”

He walked past his father as if Robert were a coat rack.

Robert watched him.

“Lucas.”

My son paused.

“What?”

“You’re not going to say hello?”

Lucas slowly turned around.

“Hi, Dad.”

“That’s it?”

“What else do you want?”

Robert opened his mouth.

Nothing came out.

Lucas shrugged and disappeared into the kitchen.

Daniel remained standing near the doorway.

He looked at Robert.

Then at me.

“Mom, are you okay?”

“I’m fine.”

“Did he threaten you?”

Robert immediately stood.

“What? No!”

Daniel’s eyes narrowed.

“Then why are you here?”

“I came to talk to your mother.”

“About?”

Robert glanced at me.

“I want us to get back together.”

Daniel didn’t react.

He simply stared at him.

For five seconds.

Ten.

Fifteen.

Finally, he said quietly:

“Why?”

Robert swallowed.

“Because I made mistakes.”

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I love your mother.”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“That’s still not my question.”

Robert looked uncomfortable.

“I don’t understand what you’re asking.”

“Yes, you do.”

Daniel stepped closer.

“You left her. You left us. You stopped answering Mom’s calls. You missed Lucas’s graduation because you were on vacation with another woman. You forgot Marisol’s birthday. You didn’t come when Mom had surgery. You didn’t come when Grandpa died.”

The room became silent.

Daniel’s voice remained controlled.

“But now you’ve decided you love her.”
