My Son Said “It’s Nothing Personal”—Then I Found Out What His Wife Had Been Hiding

PART 3

He clicked through several screens.

“It says it was processed electronically… but it required verification from the primary account.”

I stared at him.

“I never received anything.”

His expression tightened. “Then something isn’t right.”

He hesitated before asking, “Would you still like me to call your son?”

“Yes.”

He pressed the speaker button.

The phone rang twice.

“Hello?” Grady answered, distracted.

“Good morning, Mr. Whitlow. This is Corbin from Riverside Motors.”

“Oh, good. My mom finally called?”

I said nothing.

“We’re calling regarding the SUV,” Corbin continued. “The lease holder is here.”

A pause.

“My wife told you I’m taking over the purchase.”

“I understand,” Corbin replied carefully. “Before we continue, I need to confirm the lease holder’s name.”

“Grady Whitlow.”

Corbin glanced at me.

“Actually, sir, the lease holder is Karen Whitlow.”

Silence.

A long, uncomfortable silence.

Then Grady laughed.

“Yeah, that’s my mom. Same last name. She handles paperwork.”

Corbin continued.

“And the only authorized driver originally listed was you. However, an amendment added a second authorized driver approximately eighteen months ago.”

Another pause.

“Sir… do you know Dr. Nathan Ellis?”

I heard Grady inhale.

It wasn’t loud.

But it was the sound of someone whose prepared story had just fallen apart.

“What?” he said.

“That’s the name on the lease amendment.”

“I—I don’t know anybody named Nathan.”

I finally spoke.

“Grady.”

His voice changed instantly.

“Mom?”

“Would you like to explain why a stranger has legal access to a vehicle I pay for?”

“I have no idea what you’re talking about.”

Corbin quietly muted his microphone.

I could still hear Grady breathing through the speaker.

“I’m coming there,” Grady said.

Then the line disconnected.

I expected anger.

I expected shouting.

What I didn’t expect was Kelsey arriving first.

At 9:47, the glass doors slid open, and she marched into the showroom wearing oversized sunglasses despite the cloudy morning. Her heels clicked across the polished floor like tiny hammers.
