They Thought My House Was Already Theirs. Then I Opened the Blue Folder.

Two duffel bags.

A boxed coffee maker.

And a cardboard carton marked IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS.

Kendall stood beside them.

Carter remained behind everyone.

Pale.

Silent.

“We’ll take the corner bedroom,” Rita announced.

Douglas pointed toward my study.

“That room would make a great television room. That desk takes up too much space anyway.”

My fingers tightened around Warren’s banister.

Kendall smiled.

“Let’s keep this calm, Donna. Everyone’s tired.”

I walked downstairs.

“You brought luggage into a home where you were never invited to stay.”

Douglas chuckled.

“We’re family.”

Then he said the sentence that shifted the entire atmosphere.

“This place will belong to Carter someday, so why make everything difficult?”

I looked at him.

Then Kendall.

Something inside me became completely still.

On the console table beside the door sat the blue folder I had brought downstairs that morning.

I picked it up.

“The children are expecting their grandparents to be here,” Kendall said.

I opened the folder.

Inside was a cream-colored document bearing Warren’s name, my signature, and a raised seal.

Carter recognized it first.

His head lifted.

“Mom.”

I removed the document.

His expression changed.

“What did you change?”

“Something I should have changed years ago.”

Kendall stepped closer.

“What exactly does that mean?”

The doorbell rang.

Douglas frowned.

“Are you expecting someone?”

“I am now.”

I opened the door.

Martin Lawson stood outside carrying a leather briefcase.

He had been Warren’s estate attorney for nearly twenty years.

Carter recognized him immediately.

“Mr. Lawson?”

Martin stepped inside.

His eyes moved toward the luggage.

“I assume these are the people you mentioned?”

Kendall’s expression hardened.

“What people?”

Martin ignored her.

I handed him the document.

He adjusted his glasses.

“Everything appears to be properly executed.”

“What is it?” Rita asked.

I looked directly at Douglas.

“You were correct about one thing.”

His eyebrows rose.
