They Thought My House Was Already Theirs. Then I Opened the Blue Folder.

“This house was supposed to belong to Carter someday.”

Kendall crossed her arms.

“Supposed to?”

“As of yesterday, it no longer does.”

Silence.

Then Kendall laughed.

Short and sharp.

“You changed your will because of an argument?”

“No.”

Martin opened his briefcase.

“Mrs. Whitmore amended her estate plan and transferred her remaining interest in the property into a protected trust.”

Kendall blinked.

“For who?”

I answered.

“Harper and Miles.”

The color drained from her face.

Carter closed his eyes.

Douglas stared at me.

“You cut your own son out?”

“No.”

That answer came from Carter.

Everyone turned toward him.

He stepped away from the wall.

“I asked her to.”

Kendall stared.

“What?”

He finally looked directly at his wife.

“I signed the beneficiary disclaimer yesterday.”

Her mouth opened.

Nothing came out.

“You knew?”

“Yes.”

“You knew she was doing this?”

“I helped her.”

Kendall slapped him.

The sound cracked through the foyer.

Rita gasped.

Carter barely moved.

For the first time in years, I saw something steady in my son.

Not anger.

Resolve.

Kendall pointed at him.

“You pathetic coward.”

He almost laughed.

“That’s funny.”

“What?”

“For five years I’ve been afraid of losing you.”

His voice shook.

“Yesterday I realized I was more afraid of what staying with you was teaching my children.”

Kendall became completely still.

Douglas stepped forward.

“This family drama has nothing to do with us. Rita, take your bags upstairs.”

“No.”

Martin said it quietly.

Douglas turned.

“Excuse me?”

“You should probably leave the luggage exactly where it is.”

“Why?”

Martin looked toward the cardboard box marked IMPORTANT DOCUMENTS.

“Because there may be evidence inside it.”

Nobody moved.

Kendall’s expression changed first.

Barely.

But I caught it.

Fear.

Douglas noticed Martin looking at the box and immediately reached toward it.

Carter stepped between them.

“Don’t.”
