MIL served the other DIL premium crab, but gave me an empty plate: ‘Our funds for you are exhausted.’ 2 days later she calls: ‘Pay mortgage, 90 days late!’ I laughed: ‘My funds for you are exhausted!’

Instead, I stood.

“Enjoy dinner.”

Mark followed me into the hallway.

“You’re embarrassing me.”

I turned.

“No, Mark. Your mother just taught me something valuable.”

“What?”

“That generosity without boundaries becomes an expectation.”

His expression tightened.

I drove home alone.

At midnight, I unlocked the drawer in my office and pulled out a blue folder.

Inside were six years of transfers, receipts, mortgage statements, emails, and agreements.

Mark had always teased me for documenting everything.

He had forgotten what I did for a living.

I was a forensic accountant.
