MIL served the other DIL premium crab, but gave me an empty plate: ‘Our funds for you are exhausted.’ 2 days later she calls: ‘Pay mortgage, 90 days late!’ I laughed: ‘My funds for you are exhausted!’

Entitled.

I almost laughed.

Three months earlier, Mark had convinced me to send another $12,000 toward his mother’s mortgage because Diane was “temporarily short.”

I had done it because I believed marriage meant helping protect each other’s families.

Apparently, I had misunderstood the arrangement.

Diane leaned closer.

“You married into this family,” she said. “You don’t get to expect equal treatment just because you’ve written a few checks.”

“A few?”

Mark kicked my ankle beneath the table.

I looked down at my empty plate.

Then I smiled.

“Understood.”

That reaction disappointed them.

Diane wanted tears. Vanessa wanted an argument. Mark expected an apology.
