MIL served the other DIL premium crab, but gave me an empty plate: ‘Our funds for you are exhausted.’ 2 days later she calls: ‘Pay mortgage, 90 days late!’ I laughed: ‘My funds for you are exhausted!’

“Oh, honey,” Diane said. “We didn’t forget.”

Vanessa smirked.

Diane folded her hands. “Our funds for you are exhausted.”

The table fell silent.

For six years, I had quietly covered nearly everything Diane called a “family emergency”—property taxes, roof repairs, medical copays, even the $4,800 furnace she claimed would leave her freezing if I didn’t help.

And now she was humiliating me over a plate of crab.

Vanessa lifted a buttery piece of meat to her mouth. “Don’t be so sensitive, Claire. Mom’s just being financially responsible.”

I looked at Mark.

“Say something.”

He sighed. “Maybe Mom has a point. You’ve been acting… entitled lately.”
