The night before our first real road trip in 30 years, I got an email: CANCELED. I called my husband. ‘What happened?’ He said, ‘I canceled it. My sister needs you to watch her kids.’

“She is not throwing anyone out. She is declining to subsidize the business after divorce.”

Then we moved to the rental houses.

Then the inheritance accounts.

Then the retirement funds.

Then thirty years of financial records, organized so precisely that Daniel’s attorney eventually stopped interrupting.

Daniel slowly began to understand that I hadn’t come there to punish him.

I had come prepared.

That realization frightened him more.

Eventually, he looked directly at me.

“Why didn’t you tell me you were this angry?”

“I did.”

“When?”

“Every time I asked you to stop volunteering me.”

His jaw tightened.

“That’s not the same as saying you’d leave.”

“I shouldn’t have to threaten divorce to earn basic respect.”

The room fell silent.

Then Eleanor placed one last page on the table.
