The night before our first real road trip in 30 years, I got an email: CANCELED. I called my husband. ‘What happened?’ He said, ‘I canceled it. My sister needs you to watch her kids.’

For years, Daniel had confused my reliability with obedience.

By the next day, he was going to understand the difference.

At 6:52 the following morning, Melissa’s SUV rolled into my driveway.

I was already sitting on the porch with a cup of coffee.

She stepped out wearing designer sunglasses while her two children remained strapped into the back seat.

“You’re ready?” she asked.

“No.”

Melissa removed her sunglasses.

“What?”

“I’m not babysitting.”

Her mouth dropped open.

“Daniel said—”

“Daniel doesn’t control my calendar.”

She gave an irritated laugh.

“Claire, I have a spa reservation. It’s nonrefundable.”

“So was my hotel.”

“That’s different.”

I smiled.

“Apparently.”

She immediately called Daniel.

Even from several feet away, I could hear him shouting through the phone.

“Just leave the kids there!”

Melissa lowered the phone.

“You heard him.”

“Yes.”

I took another sip of coffee.

“And?”

That was when she finally realized something had shifted.

She climbed back into the SUV and drove away.

Daniel called eleven times.

I answered none of them.

Instead, I opened my laptop.

For twenty-five years, I had handled the accounting for Daniel’s small engineering consultancy.

He enjoyed introducing himself as the owner.

Legally, however, the company belonged to both of us.

More importantly, I owned the building where the business operated.
