My Husband Paid Our Babysitter Double for Months – When I Confronted Her, She Asked, ‘You Really Don’t Know?’

Our babysitter had been with our family for nearly two years, and I trusted her completely. Then I discovered my husband had quietly doubled her pay for months. The look on her face when I asked why made me realize I was the only person missing part of the story.

I only noticed the payments because I was searching for something completely unrelated.

Billy and I share a checking account for household expenses.

I was trying to find a charge from the plumber when I saw Megan’s name.

She had been receiving $1,200.

I frowned.

Megan was our babysitter.

She had watched our eight-year-old daughter, Sophie, for almost two years, mostly after school and on occasional Saturdays.

We paid her $600 a week, not $1,200.

At first, I assumed Billy had accidentally doubled one payment.

Then I checked the previous week.

She had received $1,200 then too.

I kept scrolling and realized that for four months, she had been paid double the agreed amount.

Every single week, Billy had been sending Megan twice what we were supposed to pay her.

I sat at the kitchen table staring at the screen.

It added up to thousands of dollars.

At first, I searched for harmless explanations.

Maybe Megan had started working extra hours.

Maybe Billy had asked her to run errands.

Maybe there was some agreement I had forgotten.

But four months?

And why had nobody mentioned it?

The next afternoon, Megan picked Sophie up from school like usual and brought her home around 5:00 p.m.

Sophie ran upstairs to change before dance practice.

I waited until I heard her bedroom door close.

Then I said, “Megan, can I ask you something?”

She looked up from her phone. “Sure.”

“Why has Billy been paying you double?”

She looked confused. “What?”

“You’re supposed to get $600 a week. He’s been paying you $1200.”

“What do you mean double? That’s what we agreed on.”

“No, we agreed on $600.”

Megan stared at me.

Then she said, “Wait. He never told you?”

Every nerve in my body lit up.

“Told me what?”

She glanced toward the stairs and then back at me.

“I think you should talk to Billy.”

“No, I’m asking you.”

“Alice, this is not a conversation to have with me.”

“No. I’m talking to you.”

She looked miserable, but I crossed my arms, determined to get an answer.

“You’ve been accepting thousands of dollars from my husband behind my back. I think I deserve to know why.”

Megan swallowed.

“He pays me for additional services.”

I stared at her.

“What kind of additional services?”

Her eyes widened.

“It’s not what you’re thinking.”

“You have no idea what I’m thinking, so explain yourself.”

She sighed.

“Sometimes after I pick Sophie up from school, Billy asks me to take her somewhere else.”

“Where?”

“To another house.”

“Why would my husband want our daughter to go to another house?”

Megan looked toward the stairs again.

“Because there’s another little girl.”

“What other little girl?”

“I really don’t think I should be the one telling you this.”

I had pushed her as far as she was willing to go.

I would have to ask Billy for the rest.

I didn’t call him.

I wanted to see his face, so I waited.

He got home around 7:00 p.m., carrying his laptop bag and complaining about traffic.

Then he saw me sitting at the kitchen table with an annoyed expression.

His face shifted from happy to concerned.

“What happened?”

“We need to talk.”

He put his bag down.

“Okay. About what?”

“I talked to Megan, and she told me something very strange.”

I saw fear flash through his eyes for maybe a second.

“What are you talking about?”

“The extra money you’ve been paying her.”

His shoulders dropped.

“Alice, it’s not what you’re thinking.”

“She told me about the other house and the little girl.”

He said nothing.

My heart started racing as my suspicions grew.

“Is she your daughter? Do you have a secret child?”

“Alice, it’s not that simple.”

I laughed.

“Not that simple?”

“Please, just let me explain.”

“Then explain why you’ve been secretly paying our babysitter to take Sophie to see another little girl.”
