My Father-in-Law Slapped Me on My Second Day of Marriage—So I Took Back the $30 Million He Stole From My Father

This time, I pulled out a photograph.

I placed it on the table.

Carter looked down.

His expression changed instantly.

It was an old photograph.

A much younger Richard stood beside another man in front of a construction site.

Beside them was a woman.

She was smiling.

And standing between them was a little girl.

Maybe five years old.

Carter picked up the photograph.

“Who are they?”

I pointed to the man beside Richard.

“His name was Daniel Blackwell.”

Carter looked at me.

“And the girl?”

I stared at Richard.

“Me.”

The photograph slipped from Carter’s fingers.

It landed softly on the table.

Nobody spoke.

Madison stared at me.

“You?”

I nodded.

“My father was Daniel Blackwell.”

Richard’s eyes were filled with something I had never seen before.

Not anger.

Not hatred.

Recognition.

He finally understood.

Carter’s voice was barely audible.

“Your father…”

“My father built Sterling Construction with Richard.”

Richard shook his head.

“That company was mine.”

“No.”

I took another document from the folder.

“Your father stole it.”

Eleanor began to cry.

Richard’s face twisted.

“That’s a lie.”

“You forged Daniel’s signature.”

“No.”

“You transferred the majority ownership to yourself.”

“No.”

“You convinced him to take responsibility for a loan he never authorized.”

Richard stepped toward me.

“Stop.”

“And when the bank came after him…”

“Audrey.”

“…you disappeared.”

His face went pale.

Carter stared at his father.

“Dad…”

Richard turned toward him.

“Don’t listen to her.”

“Is it true?”

“She is manipulating you.”

“Is it true?”

Richard said nothing.

Carter’s voice rose.

“Dad!”

Richard finally shouted,

“Yes!”

The word exploded through the room.

Everyone froze.

Richard’s chest rose and fell heavily.

“Yes,” he repeated.

“I took the company.”

Carter looked devastated.

“Why?”

“Because your uncle was weak.”

“He was my father?”

Richard laughed bitterly.

“No. Daniel was your mother’s brother.”

Carter looked at Eleanor.

She nodded through her tears.

“My brother.”

Carter’s face went blank.

“Why didn’t you ever tell me?”

“Because your father threatened to destroy everything if I did.”

Richard glared at her.

“And I kept this family alive.”

“You destroyed my brother,” Eleanor whispered.

“He would have lost everything anyway.”

“You caused it.”

Richard turned toward me.

“And now she has come back.”

I didn’t correct him.

Because he was right.

I had come back.

But not for revenge.

Not originally.

Three months before my wedding, I had learned the truth about my father.

He had died believing he had failed his family.

He spent the final years of his life believing he had lost everything because he had been a bad businessman.

But that wasn’t true.

He had been betrayed.

And the man who betrayed him had become the father of the man I loved.

That was the cruelest part.

I had fallen in love with Carter before I knew who he really was.

And by the time I discovered the truth, I was already engaged.

I had spent months trying to convince myself that Carter was different.

That children didn’t inherit their parents’ sins.

That Richard’s crimes belonged to Richard.

That I could marry Carter without allowing his father’s past to destroy our future.

Then, on the second morning of my marriage, Richard slapped me.

And Carter asked me to obey him.

That was when I stopped protecting the family I had married into.

Carter slowly sat down.

He looked like a man whose entire childhood had just been rewritten.

“Why didn’t you tell me?”

I looked at him.

“Because I wanted to believe you would choose me without being forced to.”

He lowered his head.

“And now?”

“Now I don’t know what you’re going to choose.”

He looked up.

I could see tears in his eyes.

“I choose you.”

My heart tightened.

But I didn’t move.

“You don’t get to say that now.”

“I mean it.”

“You chose your father this morning.”

“I was scared.”

“So was I.”

“I was wrong.”

“Yes.”

He nodded.

“I was.”

For several seconds, neither of us spoke.

Then Carter stood.

He walked toward his father.

“Give her the company documents.”

Richard’s face hardened.

“What?”

“Give Audrey everything.”

“You’ve lost your mind.”

“No.”

Carter’s voice was calm.

“For the first time, I’m thinking clearly.”

Richard laughed.

“You think she can save you?”

“No.”

Carter looked at me.

“I think she is the only person in this room who came here without lying.”

Richard stared at his son.

Then his expression changed.

“You have no idea what you’ve married into.”

Carter looked at him.

“I know.”

He glanced at me.

“And I’m finally beginning to understand what she sacrificed by marrying me.”

Richard turned toward the staircase.

“I have nothing more to say.”

“Dad.”

He stopped.

Carter’s voice was cold.

“If you ever raise your hand to my wife again…”

Richard looked over his shoulder.

Carter continued.

“…you won’t have a son to protect you anymore.”

Richard stared at him for a long moment.

Then he walked upstairs.

The sound of his footsteps disappeared.

Madison stood frozen.

Eleanor wiped her tears.

Carter came back to me.

“I am sorry.”

I looked at him.

“I believe you.”

His eyes filled with hope.

“But forgiveness isn’t the same as trust.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

I closed the folder.

“I need time.”

“How much?”

“As much as I need.”

He stepped back.

“I’ll give it to you.”

I picked up my suitcase from beside the staircase.

Carter looked surprised.

“Where are you going?”

“Home.”

“You mean your apartment?”

“Yes.”

“Can I come?”

I shook my head.

“Not yet.”

He nodded slowly.

Then he did something I didn’t expect.

He picked up my suitcase.

“I’ll carry it.”

I let him.

We walked toward the front door together.

But before I could step outside, my phone rang.

I looked at the screen.

Unknown number.

I answered.

“Hello?”

A man’s voice came through.

“Mrs. Sterling?”

“Yes.”

“This is Jonathan Blackwell.”

I stopped walking.

Carter looked at me.

The man continued.

“You don’t know me, but your father knew mine.”

My grip tightened around the phone.

“Why are you calling?”

There was a pause.

Then he said,

“Because you were never supposed to marry Carter Sterling.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

“I think you need to hear the rest of the story before you decide whether to leave him.”

I looked at Carter.

Jonathan’s voice became quieter.

“Your father didn’t lose the company twenty-two years ago.”

I frowned.

“Then what happened?”

“He gave it away.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“Why?”

“Because Richard threatened to kill you.”
