Part 4. The Hidden Waiver
Later, Celia appeared at Mara’s guest-room door with an ivory folder pressed against her stomach.
“Mom wants you downstairs,” she said. “There’s some family paperwork.”
“What paperwork?”
“Nothing complicated.”
“Then show it to me.”
Celia hesitated.
That was enough.
When a page slipped from the folder, Mara picked it up before Celia could stop her.
Across the top were the words:
Estate Distribution Waiver.
Their late father’s name appeared beneath it.
Beside the signature line was Mara’s name.
The deadline was the morning after the wedding.
Mara understood then.
She had not been invited to celebrate Celia’s marriage.
She had been brought home to sign away what her father had left her.
Celia tried to call it routine.
Mara called it what it was.
A trap.
Part 5. The Rehearsal Dinner
That evening, the rehearsal dinner glittered beside the harbor.
Crystal lights.
White lilies.
Expensive perfume.
Perfect smiles.
Mara’s assigned table sat near the kitchen doors, half hidden behind a partition.
She sat alone with a glass of water.
Then Helena took the microphone.
She praised the family’s legacy of service.
She praised Celia.
Then her eyes found Mara.
“Some people wear uniforms,” Helena said, “because fabric is easier to earn than character.”
The room laughed.
Not because they knew Mara.
Because Helena gave them permission.
Mara lifted her glass and took one quiet sip.
Across the ballroom, Rowan Blake turned toward the laughter.
Then he saw Mara.
His face changed.
He stared at her scar.
Her posture.
Her eyes.
Then he walked toward her.
“Captain Ellison?” he asked.
“For another few hours,” Mara replied.
Rowan went pale.
He whispered the old radio phrase from the mission.
“The courtyard is compromised.”
Mara answered softly:
“So was I.”
Rowan gripped the table.
“Raven.”
The truth struck him all at once.
The woman his new family had hidden behind a pillar was the pilot who had saved his life.
He wanted to expose Helena immediately.
Mara stopped him.
“Stand down.”
