Things are going to change.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I slowly placed my fork on the table.<\/p>\n<p>The china made a soft click against the plate.<\/p>\n<p>Everyone watched me, waiting for an argument.<\/p>\n<p>Instead, I smiled.<\/p>\n<p>Not because her words didn\u2019t hurt.<\/p>\n<p>They did.<\/p>\n<p>This was the same dining room where Edward had celebrated every birthday from the age of five.<\/p>\n<p>The same oak table where I had helped him finish science projects, college applications, and the paperwork for his first job.<\/p>\n<p>Every corner of this house carried memories of sacrifices he would probably never know.<\/p>\n<p>After my husband passed away twenty years earlier, I worked two jobs to keep this home.<\/p>\n<p>I refinanced the mortgage.<\/p>\n<p>Skipped vacations.<\/p>\n<p>Sold my jewelry more than once to make tuition payments.<\/p>\n<p>When Edward graduated from engineering school without a dollar of debt, I considered every sacrifice worthwhile.<\/p>\n<p>Never once did I imagine someone would eventually tell me I no longer belonged under my own roof.<\/p>\n<p>Linda mistook my silence for surrender.<\/p>\n<p>She reached across the table and picked up the serving bowl.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI\u2019ll decide where everyone sits from now on.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Martha looked at me with worried eyes.<\/p>\n<p>Edward stared at the tablecloth.<\/p>\n<p>Neither of them noticed what I had already decided.<\/p>\n<p>Without raising my voice, I stood up, picked up my dinner plate, and walked toward the kitchen counter.<\/p>\n<p>Linda smiled triumphantly.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI knew you\u2019d understand.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOh,\u201d I replied calmly, \u201cI understand perfectly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I set the plate down, reached into my purse, and took out my phone.<\/p>\n<p>Linda crossed her arms.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cCalling someone to complain?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cNo.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I unlocked the screen and selected a contact I hadn\u2019t needed in years.<\/p>\n<p>The call connected after two rings.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGood evening,\u201d I said pleasantly. \u201cThis is Margaret Collins. I\u2019d like to begin the paperwork we discussed regarding my property.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney recognized my voice immediately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMrs. Collins, are you ready to proceed?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>I glanced back into the dining room.<\/p>\n<p>Linda\u2019s confident smile had begun to fade.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe it\u2019s time.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The attorney continued, \u201cVery well.
