“Did you ever consider asking me?”
She couldn’t answer.
I stood up.
“That’s what hurts the most, Hannah. You didn’t trust me enough to let me fight for our family.”
She reached for my hand.
“Daniel, please. I want to see Emma.”
I pulled away.
“You don’t get to decide that anymore.”
I walked out.
But I wasn’t finished.
Because Robert had discovered something else.
The documents Jonah had used to threaten Hannah were forged.
And the money stolen from my company had been transferred through several shell corporations connected to Jonah.
I had spent three years believing my life was over.
Now I knew who had helped destroy it.
PART 5: THE MAN BEHIND THE ACCIDENT
Two days later, Robert called me.
“Daniel, I found the original accident investigation file.”
“What does it say?”
“The vehicle was deliberately sabotaged.”
I stopped breathing.
“Are you sure?”
“The forensic report mentions damage to the braking system. Someone interfered with the vehicle before it went over the cliff.”
“Who?”
“There’s no final identification, but I’ve found a witness who worked at the repair garage.”
I met the witness that afternoon.
His name was Thomas.
He looked terrified when he saw me.
“I remember that car,” he said. “A man brought it in the night before the accident.”
“Who?”
He handed me a photograph.
It was Jonah.
I stared at the picture.
“Why didn’t you tell the police?”
“Because I was paid to stay quiet. I have a family, Mr. Daniel. I was afraid.”
“Do you still have proof?”
Thomas nodded.
He gave me an old service record and a copy of a payment receipt.
The receipt was connected to a company owned by Jonah.
I immediately contacted the authorities and handed over everything Robert and Thomas had collected.
But there was another surprise.
The police discovered that Jonah had also been involved in the fraudulent financial transfers that had destroyed my company.
For three years, he had built his success on the ruins of my life.
That evening, I received a call from Hannah.
“Daniel, please come. Jonah knows what you’ve discovered.”
“Where are you?”
“At the house. He’s furious. He’s saying he’s going to leave with Lily.”
I heard a loud crash in the background.
Then the call disconnected.
I immediately contacted the police and gave them the address.
When I arrived, officers were already outside.
Jonah was standing near the entrance.
He looked at me and smiled bitterly.
“You should have stayed away, Daniel.”
I said nothing.
He looked toward the officers.
“You have no idea what you’re doing.”
One of the officers stepped forward.
“Jonah Fletcher, we need you to come with us.”
His smile disappeared.
For the first time, the man who had controlled every situation looked genuinely afraid.
As the officers led him away, he turned toward me.
“You think you’ve won?”
I looked him directly in the eyes.
“No. I think the truth has finally begun.”
PART 6: THE DAUGHTER WHO WAITED FOR HER MOTHER
Three weeks passed.
The investigation continued, and the financial evidence against Jonah grew stronger.
Hannah was cooperating with the authorities.
She admitted that she had agreed to disappear and that she had lied about her death.
But she also provided information that helped uncover the fraud and the circumstances surrounding the crash.
I didn’t know whether I could ever forgive her.
One afternoon, she asked to see Emma.
I thought about refusing.
Then I remembered that Emma had spent three years asking for her mother.
Whatever had happened between Hannah and me, Emma deserved the opportunity to understand the truth when she was old enough.
So I agreed to a supervised meeting.
We met at a quiet garden near the harbor.
Hannah was already sitting on a bench when I arrived.
She looked nervous.
Emma was holding my hand.
“Who is that, Daddy?”
I knelt beside her.
“Sweetheart, remember the pictures of Mommy you’ve seen?”
Emma nodded.
I took a breath.
“This is Mommy.”
Emma stared at Hannah.
For a moment, nobody spoke.
Then Emma slowly walked toward her.
“Are you my mommy?”
Hannah burst into tears.
“Yes, sweetheart.”
Emma tilted her head.
“Where have you been?”
Hannah covered her face.
“I am so sorry, my darling.”
Emma looked back at me.
“Why didn’t Mommy come home?”
I had no answer.
Hannah knelt in front of her.
“I made a very bad decision, Emma. I thought I was doing the right thing, but I hurt people I love. I’m sorry.”
