I told my mother-in-law I had an early flight the next morning

I handed him my phone.

He watched the recording without interrupting.

When the footage ended, he looked at me.

“Are you absolutely certain that’s your mother-in-law?”

“Positive.”

“And you heard her mention airport security?”

“Yes. She told Preston to make an anonymous report at six in the morning.”

Ortega rubbed his forehead.

“Do you know what she put inside your suitcase?”

“No. And I haven’t touched it.”

“Good. Don’t touch anything. We’ll handle it properly.”

I looked toward the upstairs bedroom window.

“My husband is involved. I’m certain of it.”

“Then we need to establish exactly what they’re planning.”

I gave him another piece of information.

Three months earlier, I’d discovered irregular transactions involving Lawson Holdings. Nearly $2.4 million had disappeared through several consulting companies that didn’t appear to have legitimate employees, offices, or business operations.

The payments had been approved under Preston’s executive credentials.

But something else had caught my attention.

The final transfers were connected to an offshore account registered through a company whose listed director was Lorraine.

I had quietly collected financial statements, transaction records, emails, and board meeting minutes.

I hadn’t confronted them because I needed proof.

And now they had given me something much more valuable.

A recording of a deliberate attempt to frame me.

“Detective,” I said, “I want to know why they’re so desperate to get me arrested.”

Ortega looked directly at me.

“Because they may have discovered you’re getting close to the truth.”

He was right.

But I didn’t yet understand how far they were willing to go.

At 3:40 a.m., I returned to the bedroom.

Preston was still asleep.

I climbed into bed and closed my eyes.

At 5:52, his phone vibrated.

He immediately sat up.

I pretended to be asleep.

“Yes,” he whispered. “Everything is ready.”

A pause.

“No, she doesn’t suspect anything.”

Another pause.

“Once she’s detained, we can move forward with the paperwork.”

My stomach tightened.

Paperwork?

What paperwork?

He got out of bed, walked into the bathroom, and closed the door.

I waited.

Then I heard him say something that made my blood run cold.

“By the time she gets out, the company will legally belong to us.”

I opened my eyes.

So this wasn’t simply about an airport arrest.

They wanted my shares.

My father’s company.

My inheritance.

My entire life.

At 6:03 a.m., Preston came back into the bedroom.

“Harper, sweetheart. Time to wake up. You’re going to miss your flight.”

I slowly opened my eyes.

“Already?”

He smiled.

“Wouldn’t want you to be late.”

I looked at him for several seconds.

Then I smiled back.

“Don’t worry. I have a feeling this is going to be a very memorable morning.”

He laughed.

He had absolutely no idea what I meant.

At 6:25, we arrived at the airport.

Preston insisted on accompanying me to the terminal.

Lorraine had already sent me a message.

Have a wonderful flight, dear. Call us when you land.

I stared at the message.

Then I put my phone away.

At the security entrance, two officers approached.

“Ma’am, could you please come with us?”

Preston immediately put on his concerned expression.

“What’s happening? Is there a problem?”

One officer answered calmly.

“We’ve received information regarding a prohibited item in this passenger’s luggage.”

Preston placed a hand on my shoulder.

“Oh, that’s impossible. My wife would never do anything like that.”

I almost laughed.

There he was.

The loving husband.

The concerned businessman.

The man who had personally arranged the entire situation.

The officers asked me to step aside.

I nodded.

“Of course. I would also like to make a statement.”

Preston’s smile disappeared for half a second.

“What statement?”

I turned toward him.

“Nothing important, darling.”

Then I looked at the officer.

“But before we examine my suitcase, I’d like you to know that I have video evidence showing exactly who placed the object inside it.”

Preston went completely pale.

And for the first time in seven years, I saw fear in my husband’s eyes.

PART 3: THE WOMAN THEY UNDERESTIMATED

The airport officers separated Preston from me.

He immediately protested.

“Wait a minute! I’m her husband. I should be allowed to stay.”

One officer shook his head.

“Sir, please cooperate.”

I sat in a private room while Detective Ortega arrived with another investigator.

They documented the suitcase and its contents according to the proper evidence procedures.

Inside the hidden compartment was a small prohibited weapon.

I had never seen it before.

I had never purchased it.

And I certainly hadn’t put it there.

Preston began pacing outside the room.

“She’s confused,” he told the officers. “My wife has been under enormous stress lately. She’s been imagining things.”

I heard every word.

A few minutes later, Ortega entered.

“Harper, we have the footage.”

He placed his tablet on the table.

It showed Lorraine entering my bedroom, opening my suitcase, placing the object inside, and making her phone call.
