“After years alone, I finally brought my

“Why?”

Richard hesitated.

“Because he had discovered something.”

“What?”

He looked toward Jason.

“Something about a company we worked for.”

Jason stared at him.

“What kind of something?”

“Financial fraud.”

Silence.

Richard explained that my husband had discovered money being stolen from the company. He had confronted the people responsible.

And someone had threatened him.

My husband’s death had never been an accident.

It had been made to look like one.

But there was one problem.

Richard had been the last person known to see him alive.

Jason stared at him.

“So why should we believe you?”

Richard didn’t answer.

Instead, he reached into his jacket.

I flinched.

He slowly pulled out a small envelope.

“I kept this for eight years.”

He handed it to me.

My hands trembled as I opened it.

Inside was a photograph.

My husband stood beside a younger Richard.

On the back, in my husband’s handwriting, were six words:

“If anything happens, trust Richard.”

I stared at those words until they blurred.

Then I looked up.

“Why didn’t you give me this eight years ago?”

Richard’s answer was barely audible.

“Because I was afraid the people who killed him would kill you too.”

Jason stepped closer.

“And now?”

Richard looked at him.

“Now I’m afraid they’re already watching her.”

At that exact moment, a car drove slowly past the house.

All three of us turned toward the street.

The car stopped at the corner.

Then it drove away.

Jason’s face changed.

“Mom…”

“What?”

He stared after the car.

“I’ve seen that car before.”

My stomach tightened.

“Where?”

“Outside my house.”

Richard closed his eyes.

“They found us.”

“Who?”

He looked at me.

“The people your husband was investigating.”

Then his phone rang.

Richard looked at the screen.

He didn’t answer.

The phone stopped.

A second later, a text appeared.

Richard read it.

His face went white.

I grabbed his wrist.

“What does it say?”

He slowly turned the phone toward me.

The message contained only one sentence.

YOU SHOULD HAVE LEFT LINDA ALONE.

I couldn’t move.

Then another message appeared.

WE KNOW WHERE JASON LIVES.

Part 3 — The Truth That Changed Everything
Part 3 — The Truth That Changed Everything
For the first time in eight years, I understood something.

My husband hadn’t simply died.

Someone had taken him from us.

And now, somehow, that same danger had found its way back into my life.

Jason locked the doors.

Richard closed the curtains.

Nobody spoke for several minutes.

Finally, Jason said, “We need to call the police.”

Richard nodded.

“Yes.”

But before he could reach for his phone, I stopped him.

“Wait.”

They both looked at me.

I held the photograph my husband had left behind.

“If Dad knew Richard was trustworthy, why did he never tell us?”

Jason stared at the photograph.

“Maybe he didn’t have time.”

Richard shook his head.

“He did.”

We looked at him.

Richard took a slow breath.

“There was another reason he kept quiet.”

“What reason?”

Richard sat down.

“Your husband was trying to protect someone.”

“Who?”

Richard looked at Jason.

“You.”

Jason’s face went blank.

“Me?”

Richard nodded.

“Your father discovered that the people stealing money from the company weren’t just stealing money. They were using employees’ identities to move it.”

Jason frowned.

“What does that have to do with me?”
