“My husband of forty years d:ie:d while visiting…..

The room became silent.

I looked back at the letter.

Frank wrote that Claire’s mother had discovered financial fraud involving a company that had been connected to several powerful people.

She had threatened to expose them.

Then she died.

The official conclusion had been an accident.

Frank had never believed it.

For years, he had investigated quietly.

Eventually, he discovered that someone had been following him.

That was why he had distanced himself from Claire.

He believed that anyone close to him could become a target.

But years later, he and Claire reconciled.

And then Claire discovered something even worse.

She had inherited documents from her mother.

Documents that could prove what happened.

I looked at the USB drive.

“What’s on this?”

“Everything.”

“Then why didn’t you give it to the police?”

“Because the police aren’t all clean.”

I stared at her.

“How can you know that?”

“Because one of them is the man who has been coming to my house.”

The same man.

The silver-haired man.

I suddenly remembered his face.

“Who is he?”

Claire swallowed.

“His name is Marcus.”

She opened the first photograph.

It showed a much younger Frank standing beside another man.

I recognized Marcus immediately.

“He worked with your father,” Claire said.

“What?”

“Not at the company. In private investigations.”

My head spun.

“Then why would he want Frank dead?”

“He didn’t.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“Marcus wasn’t trying to kill Frank.”

She pushed another photograph toward me.

This one had been taken only a few weeks before Frank left.

Frank was sitting in a café.

Across from him was Marcus.

On the table between them was a folder.

Claire whispered,

“Frank hired him.”

I couldn’t speak.

“To protect you.”

I stared at the photograph.

“Then why did you tell me Frank was cremated with his wedding ring?”

Claire began crying.

“Because I wasn’t the one who removed it.”

My eyes widened.

“Then who did?”

“Frank did.”

“What?”

“Three days before he died, he came to see me. He gave me his ring.”

I remembered the engraving.

Don’t believe her.

“Then who engraved that?”

“Frank.”

My breath caught.

“He told me that if anything happened to him, I was not to tell you the truth until I knew who was responsible.”

“But you told me the ring was on his finger.”

“I lied.”

“Why?”

“Because someone was listening.”

She pointed toward the ceiling.

I looked up.

There was a tiny camera hidden inside the smoke detector.

I stood so quickly that the chair fell backward.

“How long has that been there?”

“I don’t know.”

Claire took the USB drive.

“That’s why we have to leave.”

“Where?”

“Somewhere they can’t find us.”

But before we could move, the front door rattled.

Someone was trying to open it.

Claire grabbed my arm.

“Don’t make a sound.”

The handle moved again.

Then stopped.

A voice came from outside.

“Claire.”

She went completely still.

I recognized the voice.

Marcus.

Claire slowly approached the door.

“What do you want?”

“I came to help.”

“How do I know you’re telling the truth?”

“You don’t.”

There was silence.

Then Marcus said,

“Because Frank knew you wouldn’t trust me.”

Claire looked at me.

“What does that mean?” I whispered.

She didn’t answer.

Marcus continued.

“He left something for his wife.”

My heart stopped.

“For me?”

“Yes.”

Claire opened the door a fraction.

Marcus stood outside.

He looked exhausted.

He held a thick envelope.

“I tried to keep him alive,” he said.

“Where is he?” I asked.

Marcus looked at me.

And for the first time since Frank’s death, I saw something in another person’s eyes that I had desperately needed to see.

Grief.

“He isn’t dead.”

The world disappeared beneath my feet.

I grabbed the doorframe.

“No.”

Marcus nodded.

“Frank survived the collapse.”

I couldn’t breathe.

“The man who died at the hospital was someone else.”

“Then where is my husband?”

Marcus looked toward the road.

“Safe.”

“Where?”

“He wanted to come home.”

My voice broke.

“Then why didn’t he?”

Marcus lowered his eyes.

“Because he knew the people hunting him would follow him straight to you.”

He handed me the envelope.

Inside was another letter.

This one was dated six days after Claire had called me.

I read the first sentence.
