For a moment, an old familiar fear surfaced.
Then my phone vibrated.
Lena’s message read: All footage secured. Audio clear. Police notified. Fraud desk on standby.
I pocketed my phone.
Mother interpreted my calmness as weakness. “When officers get here, you say it was an accident.”
“No.”
“You will,” she snapped. “Because if Mason gets charged, Vanessa loses her chance at that nursing program, and your brother could lose his job.”
“Then he should’ve thought of that before using a tire iron on a vehicle with eleven cameras.”
The lawn went silent.
Mason’s jaw dropped.
Vanessa whispered, “Eleven?”
I gestured toward the SUV. “Front. Rear. Cabin. Side mirrors. Parking mode. Cloud backup. Impact-triggered audio. Your little performance is already uploaded.”
For the first time, Mason examined the wrecked SUV as though it were watching him.
Then police cars appeared around the corner.
Mother immediately straightened and smoothed her hair, preparing her best wounded-parent expression.
Mason muttered, “Nobody says anything stupid.”
I gave a faint smile.
Too late.
Two alert, composed officers stepped out of their patrol car. A third arrived behind them, followed by a gray sedan carrying a woman from my insurance carrier’s fraud unit.
Mother rushed toward them.
“Officers, thank God,” she cried. “There’s been a misunderstanding. My sons had an argument, and Ethan is emotional. The car damage was an accident.”
Mason quickly nodded. “I borrowed it. He knew. Then he freaked out.”
Vanessa added, “He’s trying to punish us because we need help.”
The older officer, Sergeant Hale, turned to me. “Mr. Carter?”
“Yes.”
“You made the call?”
“I did.”
He examined my SUV, Mason’s pickup, and then Mother. “Before anyone says more, I have one question.”
Mom raised her chin. “Of course.”
Sergeant Hale took out a small tablet and tapped the screen.
Then he asked, “Which part was the accident—the tire iron, the first ramming, or the second ramming after Mrs. Carter told him to make it look like a theft claim?”
Nobody moved.
Vanessa’s mouth fell open.
Mason turned pale.
Mother’s expression crumpled. “I—I didn’t say that.”
The fraud investigator approached. “We have audio from inside and outside the vehicle. We also have impact timestamps, camera footage, GPS position, and a live cloud upload showing Mr. Mason Carter striking the vehicle repeatedly.”
Mason snapped, “That’s illegal! He can’t record me!”
