I studied the cracked windshield, then Mason’s triumphant grin.
“You’re right,” I said quietly. “Family does come first.”
Then I made a call….
Mason assumed I was calling for a tow truck.
He rested against his pickup, breathing heavily and looking pleased. Vanessa whispered to him, and both laughed, interpreting my silence as defeat.
Mother paced nearby. “You will not call the police on your brother. Do you hear me? This family has been through enough.”
“No,” I replied. “I’m calling my office.”
Mason snorted. “Your office? What are they gonna do, send HR?”
He still thought I held a dull desk position at an insurance claims company. My family preferred that version of me: ordinary, quiet, and harmless.
They didn’t know I directed a regional special investigations unit handling staged collisions, arson claims, asset fraud, and expensive vehicle crimes. They had no idea I trained insurance adjusters or testified as an expert witness. And they certainly didn’t know my destroyed SUV belonged to my consulting firm and carried a complete telematics system, cloud-connected cameras, impact sensors, GPS records, and interior audio equipment used for field investigations.
Mason hadn’t simply wrecked my vehicle.
He’d handed me an entire evidence file.
“Ethan,” Mom hissed, “hang up.”
I spoke into the phone. “Lena, I need a preservation lock on Unit Seven. Pull exterior, interior, telematics, impact logs, and geofence history from the last fifteen minutes. Also notify our carrier’s fraud desk.”
Mother’s confidence faltered.
Vanessa lowered her phone.
Mason frowned. “What does that mean?”
“It means don’t leave,” I said.
His expression darkened. “You threatening me now?”
“No. I’m documenting you.”
Then he made another mistake.
He approached with his chest puffed out and declared, “You’ll tell them it was stolen. Mom said so. You owe us.”
“I owe you nothing.”
He shoved me backward against the mailbox. A neighbor shouted from across the street. Mason pointed at him. “Mind your business!”
Vanessa instantly started crying on command. “He’s trying to ruin us! Ethan’s always hated Mason!”
Mother rushed beside her and glared at me. “Look what you’re doing to this family.”
I almost responded, but instead activated my phone camera and began recording openly.
Mason grinned. “Good. Record this. You think you’re better than us because you have a fancy car? I’ll say you gave me permission to take it. I’ll say you attacked me first. Who do you think they’ll believe?”
